This sucks. Had great luck with my Garrett’s till I went back to stock.

@New recaros can you explain the thrust washer is purple. Im not up to parr with all the pieces in this turbo. Is the thrust washer the dark black purple spot right before the turbine?

Yes we have talked about over spin. I've been told that if over spin is what cased the shaft to split that the split would have circular markings. IE compressor wheel stoped spinning and the turbine kept spinning the split in the shaft would be spun apart. In person the split looks more like it melted the snapped. I will admit to beating on the truck with the throttle but i haven't gotten a chance to do so after the build. the truck simply wont stay running long enough to hammer on. the first 3 mile drive was under little to no load around the block and the second 11 miles was cruising mainly on the freeway. so i would think the surge would be great enough to have over spin.

I'm going to talk with the vendor about this though as you make a good point. There is little to no restriction on the exhaust side.

@thatJeepguy i asked if i needed the sensors when i got the turbos and was told that they were not need as it was OEM replacement and the computer would monitor it and handle. It is only a monitoring system and wont slow things down like New recaros said. I did find out today that there is a built in oil sensor port though. i thouht that was exciting to be able to monitor that.

@Cole12582 I'm glad to hear you had good luck with them. i really don't think its there fault. I think something is causing this failure that external of the turbo.

See the washer that is blued, the one on top. With all the things you’ve, could you be running lean? That would make a super hot exhaust.

Is that a two piece shaft? It looks machined a bit square edged for a one piece machined stepped shaft.

@New recaros notice that right away. It's all so dark I thought maybe it cam that way. I haven't taken the driver side apart yet to compare. We do have a the bigger XDI fuel pump and went to 1050 CC fuel injectors. We needed more fuel but its possible were not getting enough or an injector is not working properly. I did notice it was back firing a bit when id let off the throttle almost like it used to do right after a put a full tank of gas. I'd get 1 or 2 really loud back fires. This was more poppy though, but also was not under a big load or deceleration

I believe it's a one piece shaft. there is a part of it missing as its too short now to completely touch when everything is in place. its about a 1/16" or so short. Almost like it melted down when it split. That step doen is supported by a small Journal bearing and it split just inside it.

@New recaros here's the best picture I could find of a rebuild kit for a PowerMax turbo. Looks like it's a machined step down. Very abruptly. this would explain the need for the second smaller bearing

Just a thought, check to ensure the exhaust temp is working. Maybe with all the work done there the prob is not long enough or fully inserted. Maybe the knock sensor letting it advance way to far causing really hot exhaust and maybe you backfire.
