You have to compare apples to apples. Last time I spec'd out a new Lariat it was $62k and yes that was pretty loaded. Not that much less than a new loaded Raptor.
Certainly can't build a better truck for less starting at $62k. I figured it could be done for around $85k all in. vs. ~ $70k for the Raptor that has a warranty, the drive modes, and the AWD transfer case. I'm actually indifferent on all the drive modes and the AWD, but to some they are a real benefit.
I just don't think it can be done for cheaper if you're comparing apples to apples. And that means a new car right now vs. a new car right now. Not a used one and not one that you have to hunt and source parts for and not one that you have to build yourself. That apples to oranges.
I'm actually not a Jenny owner or a guy who wants to drive a full size truck with a V6. But I'm also a realist. Again, if you want a new Raptor right now there is only one option.
The question was can you equal or beat a Raptor for the same money, the answer is yes.
A 2018 Lariat SCREW 4x4 with the 5.0 is 47 and some change without any rebates / incentives - I bet a leftover '17 could be had for less. You can easily best a Raptor on road and in the dirt for the 20k difference if you are smart and patient.
The 'modes' are a nice to have, they certainly aren't needed.
Frame is a non issue.
Raptor starts at $52k, so I'm not sure how much money you save with a raptor clone. Makes a lot of sense to upgrade a 10 year old truck that you don't care about body damage, but upgrading a new Lariat is marginal at best. Resale will more than make up any difference in up front costs.
My 2017 was $52k. I don't like leather seats so I went with the 800A.
You won't sell me your Bronco so you don't count.
