You have to compare apples to apples. Last time I spec'd out a new Lariat it was $62k and yes that was pretty loaded. Not that much less than a new loaded Raptor.

Certainly can't build a better truck for less starting at $62k. I figured it could be done for around $85k all in. vs. ~ $70k for the Raptor that has a warranty, the drive modes, and the AWD transfer case. I'm actually indifferent on all the drive modes and the AWD, but to some they are a real benefit.

I just don't think it can be done for cheaper if you're comparing apples to apples. And that means a new car right now vs. a new car right now. Not a used one and not one that you have to hunt and source parts for and not one that you have to build yourself. That apples to oranges.

I'm actually not a Jenny owner or a guy who wants to drive a full size truck with a V6. But I'm also a realist. Again, if you want a new Raptor right now there is only one option.

Like I posted, a new 17 is cheaper than a new 18.

The question was can you equal or beat a Raptor for the same money, the answer is yes. We don't need to equivocate or devalue the point because it takes a little more effort. Throwing money at something typically makes it easier, if the objective is to save money or at least increase capability for the same money, then sweat equity will be involved. I also don't see how grabbing a demo with ~1k miles on it is any different than buying a second hand Raptor near MSRP, which people are doing and nobody is acting like those guys are subhuman for trying to save a buck.

I'm not knocking the Raptor, I'm a big fan, but if you are going to use one as intended, there is plenty of room for improvement - Gen 1 or Gen 2.

A 2018 Lariat SCREW 4x4 with the 5.0 is 47 and some change without any rebates / incentives - I bet a leftover '17 could be had for less. You can easily best a Raptor on road and in the dirt for the 20k difference if you are smart and patient.

The 'modes' are a nice to have, they certainly aren't needed.

Frame is a non issue.

Raptor starts at $52k, so I'm not sure how much money you save with a raptor clone. Makes a lot of sense to upgrade a 10 year old truck that you don't care about body damage, but upgrading a new Lariat is marginal at best. Resale will more than make up any difference in up front costs.

How many folks have you seen get a Gen2 at 52k? TrueCar lists the average (in my area) as 59.9k for a SCREW with lower options. The guy that posted above said he got his for 59 OTD, that is the lowest I've seen, most folks are mid 60s. Veblen in full effect...

IF you could get a new Raptor lower than MSRP (like you can get any other F150), then yes, best deal going. The idiots that paid 70k+ will NEVER get that markup back because there will only be more Raptors in the future, not less. Also, some folks are hung up on wanting a v8. They only have two options, a gen1 or build their own. My point was simply that it ISN'T more expensive to build your own, even if you start with a new truck - IF you are smart about it.

The best part is, it's BECAUSE of the Raptor that you can build up a normal F150 so cheap. Before the Gen 1 you had limited choices (like 4) for suspension and no factory stuff. Now you can build a solid mid travel F150 for like 6k over the cost of the truck.

My 2017 was $52k. I don't like leather seats so I went with the 800A.
