Took my 17 in for a check as it sounded like a diesel at startup when sitting for a while. Did lots of reading on timing chains and cam phasers but they diagnosed as VCT solenoids. Does this sound right? Only 37,200 miles...

There is a Special Service Message (SSM) from Ford to the dealers regarding this concern. The repair is to install the updated camshaft phasers and update the PCM calibration. The VCT solenoids do not cause this concern.

I cannot share a link; it's internal to Ford's system. Here is the SSM as written:

SSM 48445 - 2017-2018 F-150, 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator - 3.5L EcoBoost - Ticking/Tapping Or Rattle Type Noise On Start Up After A Cold Soak

Some 2017-2018 F-150 vehicles built on or before 10-Jul-2018 and 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built on or before 8-Apr-2019 with 3.5L EcoBoost may exhibit tick, tap, or rattle type noises from top of engine front cover for 2-5 seconds after a cold start. Replace all 4 VCT units (6256/6C525) and update the PCM calibration. Do not replace other camshaft timing related components unless inspection identifies a concern. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 303-01. Claim labor to replace VCTs using published labor operations and PCM programming using M-time. Dealers should order parts only when required to complete a repair.Once the parts are ordered, the vehicle may be returned to the customer to drive. This condition does not affect long term durability or performance.

just had my 2018 done at 35K. noise started at about 25K but I hate going to dealer. Parts list says they replace both VCT (variable cam timing) units. Dealer said it is an ecoboost thing, where some do it and others do not. Happens on engines other than Raptor.

Dealers often speculate with misinformation. The issue only affects 3.5 Ecoboost (GTDI), and only engines built 07/18 and earlier. Not all engines in the affected build date range will experience the concern.

I just had mine done on an 18 with 46k miles. Tech finished the job in just 3 working days. Parts list did not include a new timing chain.
