Got the ball rolling on the transmission rebuild today.
My original plan was to simply pull my transmission and throw it into the bed of my son’s truck, and then drive it out to Tier 1 next month to do a physical swap out. However, they don’t have any suitable cores in stock right now, so...
And so it begins…
My ‘18 SCAB is about to hit 115K miles, and needs some love.
No desire to upgrade to a Gen3 despite the Raptor R siren song. I want a SCAB more than I want a new truck, so until Ford starts building them again I’m sticking with this one.
Started out with a suspension...
Well, the ball’s rolling…
Truck’s getting the a/c evacuated right now, then home to get it up on the lift to drain fluids and pull the driveshafts.
Busy all day tomorrow, but will start the cab removal Friday. Want to get the transmission shipped to Tier1 by Monday… they don’t have any...
Congrats on the new transmission… My son just got his ‘19 non-Raptor F150 back today from the dealer today after a transmission rebuild with the new CDF drum. They also replaced most of the clutches as well as the torque converter, so he basically has a brand new transmission at 50K miles...
I’m a week or so behind you on pulling my transmission too… I'd be tempted to just replace them with regular grade 8 (or better, probably stainless) bolts in the same size.
Hey @full-race geoff I know you must be swamped with the holidays and all, but any new news? Finally finished the transmission work on my car:
…and about ready to tear into the truck now that the lift is freed up!
Never heard back from ATS after multiple attempts to reach them, so leaning...
+1 on the Raybestos steels and clutches; specifically, the gpz friction discs.
Documented in a couple other threads, but in addition to my cam phasers again, my trans is rapidly deteriorating too. Had the valve body replaced last year by Ford, but now believe they were just running out the...
Have two, primarily to support the transmission, but will also look into a couple larger ones
…forgive the mess, still moving crap out of storage and sorting what goes into the attached vs. detached garages!
Update… Finally got the 220 circuit run today, albeit just as a temp cord until I can rent a scissor lift to run conduit up top and then finish the drywall.
Regardless, the moment of truth!
Made sure the lift was hitting the jack points, always a little tricky with the shorter wheelbase in...
If I go with ATS, I’m pretty sure he will rebuild/upgrade the existing valve body…but yeah, figured as much.
Ironically, Ford just replaced the valve body in mine last October, as the last step before getting a new transmission. Unfortunately for me, my truck went out of warranty before the...
My transmission woes (and cam phaser replacement #4) are already discussed in other threads, so I won’t rehash all the reasons and events that led us here… My new 2-post lift will (hopefully) be delivered and installed next week, and my first ‘big’ project in the new garage will be a cab-off R&R...
I just used a Lube Locker gasket when I did mine 3 months, and over 5K miles ago… No sealant of any kind on the diff, cover, or bolts. No leaks.
Stock paper gasket on the left for comparison:
Key is to get the mating surfaces absolutely clean first of course:
Man, I miss the auto hobby shops on base when I was in… Sadly, they’re pretty much all gone from AF bases now though.
Will have a two post in my new garage soon though…have to redo some wiring first.
Great videos! Thanks for posting them.
I just checked my truck and have at least one hose with the crimped-on metal flange starting to split (explains my slow coolant leak), as well as a small oil leak at the front of my left-hand (driver’s side) valve cover.
As mentioned in this one, and a...
…copy all, and good luck!
I was born in Bradenton, and raised in Palmetto; lived there until I joined the AF many, many years ago. Visited my brother who lived just east of there before he moved to SC a few years back, and literally couldn’t recognize the area. A lot more folks living there...
An extended travel distance version of your scenario is exactly why I made the pilgrimage to Montclair, CA last month to have Izzy Fabrication make some modifications to my rear suspension. Well done on setting up your load correctly!
Not sure I’d want to haul that too far without something...
