Gen 2 SCAB makeover…totally not ripping off Geoff’s build!

And so it begins…

My ‘18 SCAB is about to hit 115K miles, and needs some love.

No desire to upgrade to a Gen3 despite the Raptor R siren song. I want a SCAB more than I want a new truck, so until Ford starts building them again I’m sticking with this one.

Started out with a suspension refresh earlier this year; discussed here: https://www.fordraptorforum.com/threads/100k-mile-suspension-refresh.103498/

And continued the upgrades by doing a 5K+ mile road trip out to Izzyfab in SoCal to get his tow assist setup installed (catalogued across several posts in the “what did you do with your Raptor today” thread):

Unfortunately, the cam phasers went out again on that road trip (4th time!), and the transmission just continues to deteriorate as the miles pile up…almost un-drivable when cold now. It’s time.

Finally got my detached garage/casita built a couple months ago, and since I plan to do this as a cab off R&R, went with a two-post lift … gave up the extra parking/storage capacity of a four post lift, but gained more utility as a tool.

I’m farming out the actual engine and transmission builds, but this “build” is still gonna take several weeks, maybe months, since I’ll be doing almost all the R&R labor myself. I’ve built several race cars and bikes over the years, but it’s been a long time, so I’ll be taking my time and try to avoid ******** up something simple.

And the back and knees just aren’t what they used to be either, LoL… Gonna be slow going.

I did get a one-year subscription to All Data, so I will at least have access to real maintenance manuals and diagnostics references.

Will also look into getting my own reader like the PIWIS3, BimmerLink, and Durometric tools I have for my other cars, but will probably just get a mobile Ford tech out at some point to ‘marry’ the rebuilt transmission back to the rebuilt engine with the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) software and two-way reader.

Likely cheaper to just pay them to have a tech come out and do it right the first time to avoid bricking my new drivetrain.

Got the ball rolling today, so I took the first step of having the a/c system evacuated at a local shop. They’ll apply the ~1.5# of R134 they sucked out today as a credit to getting the system refilled when the project’s complete.

…and when I got home with the new Harbor Freight 1-ton cherry picker I grabbed today (leaning against my tool box), I went ahead and mopped up the mess created over the past couple of weeks from a few brake jobs and oil changes, plus a transmission service on my track car last weekend.

Will clean up a few more things in the garage before I begin in earnest on Friday, plus I bought a rolling shelf that I still have to put together, and still need to put up the wall mounts to hold some large AKRO bins to organize stuff as it comes off the truck.

Got the ball rolling on the transmission rebuild today.

My original plan was to simply pull my transmission and throw it into the bed of my son’s truck, and then drive it out to Tier 1 next month to do a physical swap out. However, they don’t have any suitable cores in stock right now, so I’m gonna pull mine this weekend and ship it to them on Monday.

Hope they have it ready by mid January for my planned trip to PHX to drop into Full Race and ogle @full-race geoff ’s project, and pick up some goodies while I’m there.

Kind of like doing the haj to Mecca! LoL

I also had them throw in a Suncoast billet flex plate:

...and a B&M transmission dip stick. No more dicking around next to the catalytic converter to check fluid levels!

This build is pretty expensive, but does include a new Suncoast pro-loc torque convertor with a billet stator:



I was very tempted to upgrade the upgrade and get a complete billet pro-loc torque convertor as well, but had to draw the line somewhere. It’s another $2K on top of a $9K transmission rebuild, and my accountant wife is already balking!

Damn if it ain’t purty though… May still get it despite knowing it’s just more overkill
