Oil companies are not afraid of ethanol, oil companies own most of the ethanol production. Oil companies don't want to be mandated to blend it in. The bottom line is the driving factor, a bbl of good ol' gasoline is cheaper to produce than a bbl of ethanol. These days the margins on gasoline are pretty slim and ethanol is break even at best. Without a large enough production capacity distribution network or demand to sell e85 at a premium price there is just not enough profit. And the more these states want green gasoline and mandate higher methanol content, the more it cuts into the bottom line.

Isn’t it kind of a game with e10?

maybe I’m misremembering, but didn’t we lose MTBE because of toxicity, and then got e10 oxygenated fuel?

There’s only so green you can go with internal combustion, and we’ve gone about as far as technology will allow, but places like California won’t be happy until we’re back on horseback.

This whole game with summer gas, winter gas and special regional additive blends is costing all of us. Most of us probably scoff at places subject to “regional” chemical additive blends in some areas of the US, but guess what- all of us subsidize the cost to some extent.

as to the octane, we need a myth busters episode or something...

With out getting way into it, winter blend, using butane to get RVP, think watering down whiskey.

Yes oil companies make ethanol. Because the EPA forced it on them. Obviously they prefer gas production because they make hand over fist. And yes ethanol blends cut into their profit.
Rewind a bit,
So when the epa kept going to the car manufacturers to make their cars burn cleaner they finally cried that its the fuel. So the epa went to the oil companies and they came up with two solutions to clean it up by oxygenating it. Ethanol or their own mix which was mtbe, they choose to make mtbe because they could make it really cheap. Well mtbe turned out to be bad... Really bad (google mtbe santa monica)
So that got banned and we are now e10, and im certain ca has other "cleaners" or whatever that most states don't have in their fuel that makes it worse for motorized vehicles but "better" for the environment...until California realizes they ****** up again and we have another "mtbe" disaster.
Gasoline margins aren't small. Are you worried that because the price is only 52bbl? Poor big oil, thats still 58 billion in revenue for exxon. And believe me they are not stupid, guaranteed they are buying up most of tomorrows "fuels" and just stashing them away.
Ethanol is not even break even. Its government subsidized. But when no one is motivated to cheapen up the refinement of ethanol then it won't get cheaper for a while.
On to e85, i love it. I can buy it for $2 a gallon vs $12 for 110 race gas that it is equivalent to (when properly tuned)
If i had a 17 raptor the first thing i would do is convert it. If that Hennessy pile is getting 600hp on 91, with e85 you'd be pushing past 700 yawning
One last thing, California WILL **** everything up for everyone eventually

all the government did with ethanol is help it get going what they should do with everything. they are fazing out the subsidies fast most of ethanol is privet owned not big oil that's why most are probably pissed. however anyone can buy shares into ethanol plant's it's just not on the stock market. that was tried by Endries a local farmer otipenewer. they went belly up because of the newness and valaro bought it that's the only big oil I know of that has a whole plant. I'd imagine in Nebraska other places there are a lot more. I don't know who is paying the EPA to drag there feet on ethanol it's been around for 100's of years the problem is it's safe clean and produces cheap power. you can run up to 50% safely. ethanol is cheap because it's cheap to produce a lot of advancement's have already come over the last 5-10 years. also most of the whinny bitching has been debunked no it dose not take away from food no it dose not attract water anymore than any fuel it dose not phase it combines. the regular fuel phases so if you use up to 15% there is no phase separation. plus for the guy above the dyno I put up was a test on e-30 a challenge Watertown South Dakota did, thousand's of us tried it and we are still running it because it worked. It's cheaper more power and no mpg loss if any most say it gained as it was used. not one car in the test had a problem with e-30. It's not going anywhere use it or not the ones that do won't stop and the us is exporting so plenty being made with the few plant's we have. USA made fuel that's renewable makes seance to me.
