I run T6 15w-40 in my 1996 7.3
I would Highly recommend the 5w-40 version ( until I owned a lube/repair shop T-6 is what I ran in everything, diesel oil used to have more zinc which is a HUGE anti-wear additive so yes I run/ran diesel oil in my gas engines, the .gov(EPA) claims extra zinc may or may not cause catalytic converter damage, i'll take my chances, cats $1500, eco boost engine $15,000.)

@Nex if you live in any kind of climate that sees 50 degrees or lower you will notice much better start ability and drivability with the 5w-40, "cold" performance of the oil is much improved while high temp performace is not sacrificed. the way the 7.3 injection system works "flow-ability" or "viscosity" makes a huge difference on performance.

The oil I run now is "diesel" rated but in the last 5-7 years zinc levels have dropped quite a bit.

So if I go to the Ford garage for an oil change, will they put 5w40 in my 2023 raptor? Once I hit 5k miles? Still good for the warranty?

I run 5w-40 in all my vehicles (2002 7.3PSD, 2013 SHO, 2020 Raptor) I have thought about the 5w50, and that is what I have my buddy run in his 2017 Shelby Super Snake. ( which Ironically is what Shelby recommends on an engine that ford recommends 5w30 on)
I thought maybe as I ran the T6 with 3-3.5K changes in my Misut Evo. It ran 25+psi on pump sporting a stock short block. When swapping cams on occasion the internals of the head were always pristine. Differnt animal similar situation. Thank you.

You will have to ask for it. If they balk then maybe they aren't the dealer for you. As far as warranty goes again this depends on the dealer.

The dealer I worked at for 25 years didn't care about the type or brand of oil but the change interval was another story.

(Just had a vehicle in my shop that went 35,652 miles without an oil change, they could not understand why they were having engine issues at just 108,000 miles)

Change intervals to me is really the big issue. The heavier oils handle heat better and thus do not break down as quick. If forced to run a lighter oil (especially 5w20) I would change much much more frequently than 5k

Old-Raptor-guy, any thoughts on the T6 having API CK-4 (I think) vs. recommended API SN plus or SP? I'm not a chemist/engineer and generally always passed on the oil recommendation of my machinists (usually 5w-40s of one make or another). However this is an OE long block most here are running.

Reason I ask is I was to the understanding the Ecoboosts were prone to low RPM blow by causing pre ignition issues... hence the "plus" SN/SP (whatever) rec. Again, a bit above my level of education, but learning.

OK what about 0w40? Can that be run instead of 5w40?
i did it for a few changes, didnt notice a difference in noise or temps.
Usually run 0w-30.

I know people say you prob dont need that light of an oil, but i figure the faster the oil gets to places during cold start the less wear that can happen.
The only "downside" is the higher volatility or chance of breakdown (if you check amsoils site you can see), seems like 0w-40 has a slightly less volatility than 0w-30, i read somewhere it uses a better base or something.

My bike calls for 10w-40 and i thought about using 5w-40 or other similar shit but since the oil goes to the drivetrain its super hard on the oil and shreds any "lighter" oil. But the 30 seconds of pinging on startup isnt great to hear

FTM says the ecoboost is also hard on oils, so dunno if goin to a xW-40 oil, if 0w or 5w is better i dunno. I do know that like @Old-Raptor-guy said, ive only had issues on motors that ford swapped to 5w-20 from 5w-30, on rebuilds i ran 0w-30 with no issues.

I think someone posted in here Roush? recommended 5w-40/50 for their tuned raptor package.

I agree, I understand everyones point, then honestly makes me want to use cheap oil and change every 3k since ill be keeping this truck for a long time. I think muddying the waters talking about heavier weight stock is a bit much for me.

What brand for the 7.3 then? And it never gets below 50F in the Seattle area. Or is it never gets above 50F? I can't remember, numbers hard.

I am currently running Amsoil SS 5w-30 in the Raptor. Both trucks are on a 5k oil change interval.
