Upgraded IWE

If a full time hub was available for the Raptor would you upgrade?

Been checking into it... Replacing torsen with eld cost about $800 (plus install).. For normal (not netix or wsi type drivers) this would allow you to use 4wd on snow covered roads without worrying about the constant loading and unload IWE gear..

Been thinking about this a bit and was wondering what you thought about converting the hubs to hydraulic actuation from vacuum???

We'd have to figure out how to make the system run backwards, pressure engages the hub / spring disengages but hydraulics would let you run a much stronger spring. That should help to eliminate the partial engagement crap that it's causing some of the trouble with the current system.

What do you guys think?

same thing with the electric clutch but it is much simpler and cost effective? on is on off is off

Yep, only issue I see with an electric system is that the IWE spins relative to the spindle. The relative motion of the power wire(s) to the actuator would require some kind rotating joint like in an electric motor. Its doable but I don't know you could make it work without machining the spindle. A hydraulic system could use the same passages as the vacuum system dose and the fluid would allow the actuating mechanism too spin relative to the spindle.

That is a good idea.. SDHQ is also working with several vendors trying to come up with a fix. They are seeing the same issues with IWE's now that 2012's are getting miles on them.. There is a concern/issue and not just people driving hard (netix)..

I guess I'm thinking the electric clutch would be what moves the IWE into gear and out? gear would rotate with a progressively wider bevel to push the gears together?

Would replacing the OEM Torsen with a Wavetrac make any difference? Just asking.

I have followed this and have seen why Ford did what they did, but really the best solution is a manual locking hub. If you lock it all the time your going to always spin the front cv joints and we already know they are a problem. You could do it electrically with magnets and a spring. But I know as weak as it is now I dont want to turn the front axles and CV joints constantly at 375 per assembly I would rather do the IWE. But a manual locking hub seems to be a better idea...

Sdhq is working on a lock hub option.. The problem is it will not be a cheap option.. Since there is not enough clearance wheel bearing and axle. It will axle, hub assembly, and possibly spindle upgrade to make locking hub work..
