Transmission Drive engagement when cold

14’ with 80k miles, no open recalls

When starting up cold, say between 30-60 degrees, I will let the truck idle until it atleast idles down the rpms before shifting to reverse. Seems to shift fine into reverse, then when I go to select drive it sometimes has a firmer engagement that can be felt in the truck. No grinding and trans works as normal all other times

Seems to only be when cold and selecting drive for the first time (after first time selecting drive, you can go back to reverse and then back to drive and doesn’t do it again. No gear shifting issues whatsoever. Just the firm engagement when selecting drive when cold.

Maybe too much line pressure when it first gets put into drive?

Have you preformed a transmission tune up at the dealer in the 80K miles.
Transmission fluid (and filter I assume)changed at the dealer approx 25k miles ago when previous owner owned it.

I checked the fluid condition last night and it’s not bright red, it has a darker red tone when the fluid is put on a paper towel but it’s far from being dark red or black

Recently did a transmission fluid changed and experiencing similar symptoms. Saw on the regular F-150 forum that I should try disconnecting the battery (remove negative terminal) for 15 minutes to see if that helps.

Is the firm engagement you are feeling related to the slip yoke clunk?
A cold transmission will definitely have a firmer shift until fluids get up to temp, but as MTF was asking, has the trans ever been serviced with fluid and filter?
I do mine every 30-40k just to keep it clean and fresh..

Recently did a transmission fluid changed and experiencing similar symptoms. Saw on the regular F-150 forum that I should try disconnecting the battery (remove negative terminal) for 15 minutes to see if that helps.
Disconnecting will force a trans relearn. In my experience they will shift like shit for a bit until relearn is done.

It’s hard to describe.. when putting it into D for the first time in a cold start (with your foot against the brake and after the truck idled down), it drops into D and engages firmly (no grinding or weird sounds other than the sound of the firm engagement into D and slightl lurch forward).

The lurch forward/firm engagement into D feeling is very quick and doesn’t over power (push through) the brakes when they are lightly applied. Won’t do it again until truck is a cold start again and isn’t every cold start. Shifting into D any other time is without any noise or firm engagement and no lurch feeling

I did a quick search on the slipe yoke and that could possibly be it..

Transmission serviced by dealer 25k miles ago when previous owner owned it (service shows up on carfax). Fluid is darker red but is not black.

It goes away when the fluid heats up, so I probably wouldn't worry.
