GEN 1 Transfer Case Oil: Mercon LV ATF vs XL12 Transfer Case Fluid

2014 owners manual shows Transfer Case Fluid XL12. Saw somewhere that Mercon LV ATF is approved to be used in the transfer case.

Need confirmation on this.

Which oil is currently being utilized?

As far as I have been able to determine, Ford has never published the specifications or characteristics of its proprietary transfer case fluid. That being the case, then no one could reliably claim to have identified an equivalent.

I'm going with the Motorcraft XL12. I saw where Valvoline claims their transfer case fluid meets Fords XL12 specs. Same price for both in my area.

I saw that too, but it was not from what I considered a reliable source, so I'm going with XL12.

Nice, would be interested in seeing it, I used Motorcraft XL12 from rockauto last year but when that dries up I'll eventually need to use something else. LV in the trans and t-case both would simplify things a little.
