Like others have said, this statement is not true. I have spoken with Jeff when I first got it. If you are running the default from SVC it is set at 0 spark which is 91 octane or higher. If you are running gas with lower octane then you need to adjust.

You can still run 87 in it with this tune if you keep your foot out of it and listen for spark knock.

You can do a lot of things, even use E-30 if you really wanted to. But why mess with doing that, it only takes less than 10 minutes to reflash the tune with a -4 spark if you want to use 87. I usually change the tune while I am filling up with gas if I decide to use a different octane level.

Must be careful because Global Spark adds or removes Timing Advance to the entire RPM range. Use the correct octane for your Global Spark setting! Always run all the 87 out first (just to be safe) and fill up with correct octane if using -2 or 0 (89 or 91) with SVC tune.

It will spark knock even on lite throttle! The re flash is so simple and fast why risk it.

I have had zero issues running 87 in mine. I have run that way since I installed the tune. Has mileage is also much better as I am averaging 16mpg on a mixed commute.

Not all spark knock is audible, in any vehicle if the timing (global spark) is advanced and the octane is lower then the spark advance allows for optimal gasoline burn it is harmful over time even if it is very minimal.

You can surely do what ever you want in terms of tuning on your vehicle it may work for you running 87 on the 0 global spark setting but it did not work for me.

Why would running a lesser octane fuel than the tune was designed for seem like a good idea? To each his own, but the cost difference from 87 to 91 or 92 is worth not risking damage to your engine.

Just loaded the tune, thanks @svc Jeff, and I already noticed a lot of differences. I had the 5* performance tune and tried the 5* eco tune, for my truck being a daily driver, I don't think either is what I was looking for nor coincided with my driving style.

The SVC tune is dialed in, nice power, throttle response, and trans shift patterns are great.

I'll review more once I get more miles on the tune and try and do a side-by-side comparison between the two.

Ok.... Just to clear up any misconceptions about fuel octane and global spark settings etc....

We DO NOT reccomended running lower octane fuel than the designated global spark setting.

The SVC TUNE is preset for 91+ octane fuel at global spark 0

89+ octane at global spark -2

87+ octane at global spark -4

Using higher octane than what global spark is set for is ok.

Using lower octane than what global spark is set for is NOT ok.
