THIS EXACTLY! I tell people this till I am blue in the face and they say "yea yea I know" and then they go and take the first job the recruiter wants them to take, "Because there is nothing else available". And the blue falcon train keeps chugging right along! Tell that recruiter to freaking shove it if they don't give you the rate you want, tell them you'll go next store to the next branch that will give you what you want and doesn't make you wear the classic minion uniform...!
Personal Reference- Naval Special Warfare career ruined due to recruiter
My Naval Special Warfare career was delayed by 4 and a half years due to a recruiter saying off hand that at MEPS I could pick "ANY" job I wanted, as soon as that was done, I could take my SPECWAR physical and apply for SEAL/SWCC/EOD/Diver. Unbeknownst to me this did not apply to any rating that was a submarine rate, or nuke. Thankfully I wasn't dumb (smart?) enough to take nuke, but had picked a submarine rate. On the way back to the recruiting station I told him what I had picked and only then did he inform me that submariners couldn't volunteer for SPECWAR.
Now, as a more senior Petty Officer than what my recruiter was at the time (we are the same rank now, funny enough) I know that he wasn't malicious, just misinformed. He had been told that it was impossible and in turn told me the same. I now know that while in DEP you can do just about anything as far as changing your job, even if that means quitting, waiting a few months and then joining up with the job you wanted.
All that, I ended up loving my job, doing a lot stuff I didn't know that the Navy did. I ended up seeing far more of the world than I would have as part of a SpecWar group. But after that was all done, and I still wanted to [at least] try to join that community and after about a year of paperwork, dive physicals and hard training I finally received the opportunity and I've been super happy since.

Playing the devil advocate, while I completely agree that you need to know what you're getting yourself into, people also need to understand that they are here to support their armed services and not the other way around. I often hear people complaining about the cards they were dealt in the military and while sometimes people really do get screwed, most of the time it just makes me sick listening to the entitlement that people carry with them. Your military isn't meant to bend over backwards to each individual service member and the job they want, if you fit the needs for said job, often enough you'll end up there, if you don't then they'll put you where they want you. Everyone sees themselves as a fighter pilot or an operator, but the world needs water purification specialists, quartermasters, etc etc. This coming from an Infantry officer that saw himself doing alot more Infantry and alot less paperwork, I know all about the job not living up to expectations.
Serving your country is serving your country, I'm not arguing that. And some people don't care and just want to join (and don't play the game, if you will) and then get pissy when they get a certain "******" job, but for some, there is legit grievances because their recruiter withheld info, or lies of omission. Then again I know for a fact the recruiter could very well have told them one thing and the recruit heard something else.
