My Naval Special Warfare career was delayed by 4 and a half years due to a recruiter saying off hand that at MEPS I could pick "ANY" job I wanted, as soon as that was done, I could take my SPECWAR physical and apply for SEAL/SWCC/EOD/Diver. Unbeknownst to me this did not apply to any rating that was a submarine rate, or nuke. Thankfully I wasn't dumb (smart?) enough to take nuke, but had picked a submarine rate. On the way back to the recruiting station I told him what I had picked and only then did he inform me that submariners couldn't volunteer for SPECWAR.
Now, as a more senior Petty Officer than what my recruiter was at the time (we are the same rank now, funny enough) I know that he wasn't malicious, just misinformed. He had been told that it was impossible and in turn told me the same. I now know that while in DEP you can do just about anything as far as changing your job, even if that means quitting, waiting a few months and then joining up with the job you wanted.
All that, I ended up loving my job, doing a lot stuff I didn't know that the Navy did. I ended up seeing far more of the world than I would have as part of a SpecWar group. But after that was all done, and I still wanted to [at least] try to join that community and after about a year of paperwork, dive physicals and hard training I finally received the opportunity and I've been super happy since.

Serving your country is serving your country, I'm not arguing that. And some people don't care and just want to join (and don't play the game, if you will) and then get pissy when they get a certain "******" job, but for some, there is legit grievances because their recruiter withheld info, or lies of omission. Then again I know for a fact the recruiter could very well have told them one thing and the recruit heard something else.
That's the problem with navy specwar, there isn't much to fall back on. In the army you can come in with a rasp or xray contract and go directly to sof, or come in and be in a conventional line unit and gain some experience. You can go somewhere like the 82nd if you want to work with sof alot and get your feet wet, then when you feel like it put a packet in for selection or rasp. You've got all of our other sof elements like ca, psyops, and the number of special missions units that I wont mention by name. Hell we have soo many groups that half of the time when i get the blanket recruiting emails about them i'm not even sure which one it is. Even if after all of that you don't find a place in the sof world for yourself, you can still be an infantryman, there's just so many options.
