I have no idea which way to go for a radio yet. Would just like one that works and can be used for other events down the road. Certainly don't want to spend a ton of money for something I might use once a year or less.

I'm with you on that! I wish someone would make a thread for ignorant individuals like me to explain to me the differences and what to look for and why. I really want to get a radio but dont really know what to look for or what I'm looking at. VHF why this rather than something like a CB simple stuff I should know, but haven't been around the VHF part to know very much at all about it.

There are a couple threads on radios with lots of info. Just search on a couple of the radio names. Lot of work went into these threads and there are links to additional info.

The link that Joe provided on the previous page is a great radio. Unfortunately, Roger already sold it (It was a great price and included an antenna, which you will need).

However, if you PM Treypal, he can hook you up with the same radio already programmed with all the channels you need for the various Raptor runs around the country.

P.S. Congrads to the #15 truck (Jeff) for joining this Epic trip!!!! We should have a darn good convoy from the Midwest to SD.

WyoStorm-

After doing one event, you will be scheduling your next one... Add me to the long list of ppl who said, "Im only going to use this radio one time a year, and having trouble justifying the $..."

The radio is really a huge part of these events, to stay organized/updated, but most importantly it is a great entertainment along the way ;) For all the money spent on these trips and accessories, this purchase carry's much value IMO.

Add me to that crowd. I went into the snoball saying "i dont need a radio i dont know if ill have a good time, or all these raptor guys will be a bunch of douches, and i cant justify the cost of the radio" Last minute i decided to go with the icom. Got it within 2 days and have no complaints.

The discussion on this south dakota trip happened within a few days after we returned from snoball, as well as other trip ideas.

It really comes down to if you want a hand held or mobile base unit. Base unit has much longer range and power than the hand held for a little more money.

Keep in mind also, if your going to go handheld and everyone else around you has a mobile base radio, you will most likely get talked over. I know on the way up to snoball jeff had a handheld and we had one hell of a time hearing him.
