REBELx504,
I had to change the PS pump in my 2004.5 Dodge Cummins 3500 crew cab long bed two times. Same problem as you each time; block the front end up off the ground and twist the wheel back and forth...add more PS fluid...twist the wheel back and forth...add some more PS fluid. After about 20 cycles most of the air is pumped out and voila you have power steering. Then check the the fluid again 100, 300, and 500 miles out topping it off each time...
Of course check for leaks, make sure the high pressure line is attached to the rack in the high pressure port and not the low pressure return port....

When the rack goes, there is still power to the steering. The rack will clunk while turning when it is bad.

There is probably air in the system.

looks like the rack will need to be rebuilt...local company says $250 and 2 days, so guess will get to that next week...

Had on of the techs from the Ford store that lives near me bring his laptop over and program the ABS module to my VIN, so that's done...once we got it talking to the PCM we found out there is a bad rear wheel speed sensor, so I ordered that today. If I'm lucky that will clear the lights off of the dash...we'll see...

The BIGGEST problem as of yet is the dam thing won't idle!!!!!!!
Starts up just fine runs for about 2 min to warm up then idle drops to about 619 rpms and stalls out...also if you put it in gear, it drops rpms and dies....all with no check engine lights or codes.

if you hold the rpms up to about 800 and drive with two feet she runs fine...actually drove her around for about a half hour yesterday...still have a lot to do, but she's mobile...now if only I could FIX THE DAMN IDLE PROBLEM...HELP!!!!!
