I'm a licensed Ham radio operator, and what you do, and how you use a certain radio is your choice. I can't say getting the license gives you any inside dope on how to properly operate a Ham radio. Join a local Ham group, and they'll help you immensely.
I took a 1 day class, it was easy, no problem at all.

Ask this question first... What are you trying to do? Who are you trying to talk to?

There are many "bands" of radio frequencies out there, and radios made specificaly for each, and some that can cover most.

However, some of those options will require licenses if you want to be legal about it.... Ham, GMRS, FRS, MURS, CB, MARINE, Air Band. (I think listed them all)

Not getting into the technicalities of it. No shortage of information on the subjects on the interwebs.

Works really well and if you have the time and ability to splice wires yourself easy enough to fabricate yourself. Honestly my time is worth more than $25, so simplicity’s sake just ordered it along with my radio from him. Made install quick, easy, and painless.
