Question about oil consumption test on a 2019.

I am currently doing the oil consumption test on my 2019. TSB 19-2232. The oil has dropped over half the mark from top hole to bottom hole. It has been about 2,000 miles. The service advisor says it needs to drop a full quart in 3,000 miles for it to be covered. He said the difference from the top hole to the bottom hole is 1 quart. Is that true? Seems like it would be more from the 2 holes.

Currently under the oil consunptiom issue. Yes from one hole to another hole is 1 quart less. Tbh I dont think this oil consunption issue will be fixed.

I have a 2019 SCREW bought in late October and now have 4500 miles on it. I have not had any oil consumption issues at all, has stayed full with no oil consumption so far. I will say though that the oil itself gets dirty and broken down very quickly in this engine. I changed first time at 1500 and now had to change again at 4000 as the oil was so dirty even after only a couple thousand miles on it

All IC engines use oil over time when operational. A half a quart used in two thousand miles is common. If you have a catch can, you'll see some of it accumulate in the can. The color of oil is not an indication of quality. Oil breaks down over time with use and becomes acidic. Darker oil is doing it's job a carrying dirt away from engine parts. The oil filter will capture small particles and remove them but it won't change the color. Having an oil test is the only way to tell how much useful life is remaining. Changing oil at 5K miles has been recommended by many with the EcoBoost and is probably good advice. These aren't large displacement V8 engines and they work much harder trying to produce the same amount of power, so they are going to use more oil. A 3.5L V6 engine is turning many more revs than a larger V8 to get the same amount of work done. More revs means more oil consumption.

Mine has been great Since the valve cover replacement. Just drain some oil before you go in and make sure it is low....

just curious as to why you say it won’t be fixed? Do you have it or are you just throwing out baseless accusations without and real world experience with the issue? Is so keep the conjecture to your self, we don’t need any more unfounded retorts.

Ideally the valve covers should replace it. Me and plenty of other Gen 2 owners have not had any luck after the TSB for valve covers. Essentially leads to Ford putting a new engine (which I dont want) and buying it back. Ask plenty of owners, the TSB is a 50% fix for gen 2 trucks.

All of the turbo cars Ive owned consumed a lot of oil. My X5 50i (V8TT) consumes 2 qts every 2500-3000 miles...which is within the range of normal.

Since my last oil change on my raptor (Actually my 1st oil change ever) ive had to add 1 quart in 3500 miles. Yours sounds normal to me.

Did they follow the procedure? It doesn't sound like they did.

TSB 19-2232:

Service Procedure:

1. Visually inspect for engine oil leaks. Are any visible leaks present?

(1.) Yes - this article does not apply. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01.

(2.) No - proceed to Step 2

2.) Drain the engine oil. Remove and replace the oil filter.

3.) Fill the engine with 4.7L (5 quarts) which is 1L (1 quart) less than the specified fill level.

NOTE: Make sure the vehicle is positioned on a level surface.

4.) Run the engine for 3 minutes if hot or 10 minutes if cold. Turn off the engine. Allow for a minimum 15 minute drain back period and record the oil level shown on the oil level indicator by placing a mark on the backside of the oil level indicator.

5.) Add the final 1L (1 quart) to complete the normal oil fill. Restart the engine and allow it to idle for 2 minutes. Turn off the engine.

6.) After a 15 minute drain back period, record the location of the oil level by placing a mark on the oil level indicator at the new oil level location.

NOTE: Do not use the factory oil level indicator markings for the oil consumption test. Use only the markings applied to the oil level indicator in Steps 4 and 6.

7. Explain to the customer the factory-calibrated marks on the oil level indicator are where the oil should fall after an oil change with the specified fill amount. Explain this may vary between MIN-MAX or the upper and lower holes on the oil level indicator.

8.) Record the vehicle mileage.

9.) Advise the customer that oil level indicator readings must be taken every 320 km (200 mi) or weekly, using the revised marks as drawn on the oil level indicator. Remind the customer the engine needs a minimum 15 minute drain back, the vehicle must be placed on a level surface for an accurate reading and the oil level indicator must be firmly seated in the tube prior to taking the reading.

10.) When the subsequent indicator readings demonstrate a 1 full liter (1 quart) has been used, record the vehicle mileage. Consider the drive cycle the vehicle has been operated under when making this calculation. It may be necessary to have the customer bring the vehicle in for a periodic oil level indicator reading to closely monitor oil usage.

(1). If the vehicle has traveled at least 4,800 km (3,000 mi) and oil consumption has not met or exceeded 1L (1 quart), the vehicle is operating normally and no repairs should be performed. NOTE: Use only the marks applied to the oil level indicator during Steps 4 and 6 for oil consumption measurements. This is a more precise measurement that eliminates any variability in the markings on the factory oil level indicator.

11.) Measure the distance between the mark made in Step 6 and the current oil level on the oil level indicator. Record this measurement in millimeters, the current vehicle mileage obtained in Step 10, and the beginning mileage recorded in Step 8 on the repair order.

12.) Does the oil consumption measured exceed 1L (1 quart) in 4,800 km (3,000 mi) or less?

(1). Yes - replace both valve covers. Refer to the WSM, Section 303-01

(2). No - vehicle is operating normally, no further repairs are necessary. Repair is complete.

My dip stick was marked approximately 1/2" down from top hole. Just a guess as I'm downstairs right now and it's dark outside, (going from my mental picture) .

Today I drove as usual and I did notice about 1.2 mpg improvement as some others had mentioned after getting their valve covers replaced.

It's still early so time will tell whether or not this solved my oil consumption issue.

I did hound them to make sure they ordered from Ford Depo and that they used the correct valve cover numbers for replacement.

For the post that agreed that from the top to bottom hole is indeed 1 quart I'll state this .......Now why would they have to follow this procedure if from the top hole to the bottom hole was 1 quart difference, they wouldn't.

I don't understand how folks just blatantly spew misinformation.

So I dont see the new markings on my dipstick. Can you upload a picture? I got the TSB done but checked after 1k miles and I'm still down 1 quart. 1138c58abf90eb995bf2dbaf30d4b762.jpg
