Question #25: CB/Ham Radio Operators

I went with a rugged radio in the center console tray and an antenna that came with it on my GJ third brake light. Speaker is mounted under driver seat.

I did the Raptor Assault this past week. They mount their CBs in the center console (arm rest) against one the wall of the console on the passenger side. Then the mic/speaker is rested in the center console under the radio with the coil cable drive through the opening in the console. Inside the armrest console is a small hole where power and the antennae wire are run. I also looked at the top of the trick and the small antenna is drilled on top of the rear brake light. I assume they properly ran the cable up under the carpet and up the c-pillar to where it connects to the wire. You might reach out to them to find out how they mounted it. During the Raptor Assault it was used to communicate from the instructor to the other trucks. It came in very useful and I could see how that would work well for an multi-vehicle outing to stay connected, especially when cellular is lacking.

Just realized this wasn't a CB-only thread. I also carry a Baofeng UV-5R and UV-9R in the truck.

At 14 my neighbor who was big into it (Yaesu base plus Moonraker antenna) named me Tiny Tim but as I got older I changed it to Windjammer. Goes over better with truckers.
I had a Porsche 928 that I put 300k miles on and drove all over the country. I'd be in with a group at night going along with 10-15 trucks and after awhile they'd ask who I was driving for? I speed up from the back by them all with a "Holy Crap, is that you?". Big ol' Wilson 5000 antenna flying. Always got a huge laugh and a U-turn from whatever we were talking about onto a classic car chat.

This is set up for my 2019 Kenwood and Bullet proof diesel 3rd brake light . Pic is off PCI website , i may mag mount mic center console next to the shifter . Haven't taken out of box yet 80 work weeks just have time to sleep . LOL



I wanted a cleaner look in cab than my 2010. Bit pricey but what the hell.

Have an Icom 706 Mk IIg that covers all the ham frequencies from 1.8 thru 500 MHz, including race radio and CB frequencies. Main body of the radio under the back seat and speaker under front seat. Radio control head bolted to a plastic cup that lives in a cup holder in the center console, one wire Runs under the carpet to the back seat. I can pull the ‘cup’ and put it in the console to hide it. Antennas in the bed. Power direct from the battery. All wires run under the truck up thru a plastic plug under the floor of the back seat, under the carpet to the tray under the seat. No new holes in the truck!
