Question #25: CB/Ham Radio Operators

I got caught by one in the late '80's. They were up in a light plane and radioed down to patrol cars. I don't know if they still do that or not?


That's what made me park my cb years ago. Every 2 minutes someone was doing a time check, or a radio check, just to hear themselves talk. What's the #1 son mean? I never heard that one.

There were (I hope "were") these guys from the Carolinas that would run skip so strong that it would reverberate off the ozone to Calif. Always harping about his #1son, perhaps the FCC got tired of all the complaints and put stop to it.
Ruined CB for me though most of the Jeep groups ran Channel 16 (4X4) on every adventure. In Fact the first time I heard about Race Radios was on our first trip over the Rubicon Trail.

It was weird how CB changed in the 70's. For a long time it was mostly truckers, and a handful of "car guys" that used cb's. Give each other a heads up on speed traps, accidents, etc, that was nice and really useful. Late 70's it exploded and every fool bought one and ruined it with annoying blabbering. The whole market died within a few years.

As long as you are between cities it’s still pretty much like the 70’s. I use it for road/bear info and listen to the truckers stories. And boy do they have some interesting conversations. Especially about the working women at the truck stops.

Plus I’ve always driven pretty special cars and truckers are always shocked at what I’m driving as I can talk their language. I was a CB hack in the early 70’s when it exploded.
