I'd like to hear too, been wiping a film of oil on those things for almost 40 years now.Wondering why that would be?

To keep them locked in place maybe?I'd like to hear too, been wiping a film of oil on those things for almost 40 years now.

Exactly the way I've been doing it for years also.Only reason I could think of is the filter can be overtightened. Could possibly pull threads or be a female dog to take off.
Film of oil is so that the gasket doesn’t stick to the mating surface. Or deform the gasket on styles of filter.
I still wipe clean oil on the gasket, spin it on and hand tighten. Not gorilla right tho.
Always pre fill filter and oil gasket. I thought this was common knowledge.Motorcraft filter FL-500S shows oiling the gasket on the filter box installation picture.
Never thought much about not doing it until I read this thread.
