Does the sunroof rails need to be cleaned/lubed if I never open the damn thing? Literally never. I hate having it but didn’t have a choice.

depending where ya live/time of year- yeah dirt/pollen/sand- I usually suck up w/ shop vac & wipe excess stuff & ive used white lithium type grease but only a small amount on a rag first- I think there’s a separate “Ford approved” lube for the rails & pivot points but don’t think it’s nearly as important as using the krytox specifically on the weather stripping

There is a TREMENDOUS amount of off-road land throughout all of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Basically, if you aren't in a city, you are very close to great desert. You can easily off-road from Vegas to Barstow. The Mint 400 course is just outside Vegas/Henderson with a ton of land to explore. There are off-road trails leaving the parking lots of the casinos in Mesquite. There's races out of Laughlin/Bullhead City as well, with off-road area right at the edge of the city. Basically all of Mojave. Around Black Rock in northern Nevada. I know there is a bunch of trails around Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase, Grand Canyon, and Canyonlands in Utah.

I'm doing a road trip in a few days from Iowa to SoCal and Phx for a couple weeks. Stopping in Vegas too. Going to run by Moab and check it out since I've never been there. Also going to hit Anza-Borrego in SoCal if I have time, and do some desert exploring in AZ.

Not planning on any heavy duty off-roading or anything too extreme since it's in the middle of a long road trip and some of the locations I will have all my luggage and everything inside, plus usually by myself.

Considering these sunroofs seem to enjoy spontaneously exploding with little provocation, just how much do I need to worry about that off-roading? What if I find an appropriate place to catch a LITTLE air? Who's sent it with a sunroof and it survived? I understand there's no guarantees, but just wondering about experiences.

I also have a hard 3 piece bed cover that's clamped down in several places. Any worries about that?

Lastly, anybody know of some decent open desert areas around Phoenix? I used to live there, but it's been about 15 years and I know things have grown like crazy and changed there.

Can't wait to hit the road!

Sounds like a great trip. I’m in Vegas and all I do now is Hike and Wander the Desert in my Raptor. Give me a shout and I can show you some Great Trails in and around Vegas. There is some OUTSTANDING Runs out at Lake Mead.
The offer is good for anyone coming to Vegas anytime. I’ve been Wheeling here for 30 years.
IMHO I would make adjustments to the SoCal part of the journey and head to Death Valley!! It’s the PERFECT time for DV. It has over 1500 miles I believe of 4x4 Trails♥️♥️ I ran my Gen-1 across the Desert there at 100mph(Fnig Govner)

The sunroof will be fine. You can play in the dunes out by the racetrack in Vegas, lots of fun!!

FYI my CR Brother. I stay away from the sand at the Nellis Dunes. Two many Dirt bikes jumping around out there like idiots thinking “ I’m the only one here “
There is some great Sand near Logandale near the Valley of Fire and up the street in St George. I’ve handled some horrendous accidents at Nellis.
Give me a shout if you head up this way.
