That looks like magnesium or aluminum mixed with salt. I work on helicopters and that's exactly what magnesium does when salt water gets on it. So my money is on magnesium. Magnesium is very susceptible to salt. Corrodes very fast. I had to down one of our aircrafts main gear boxes because of salt water getting under one the the forward bridge mounts. That type of corrosion can be classified as galvanic (mentioned earlier) or pitting corrosion. Once it starts its hard to stop. You have to catch it early then clean, treat, and re-protect the metal.
