mine has a tiny leak too, but I think it might be the rack. I had mine apart a couple of times fooling with it. You're at such an awkward angle tightening the rack fitting that I was really careful not to strip the nut. I ended up tightening it several times. Now there is a tiny leak, but the fluid in the can isn't going down. It could also be oil from the front cover too. If that's it, I'm paying a shop to fix it. I hate leaks. It rains so much up here that I never know if it's steering fluid or oil, I just see the rainbow on the ground...summer right around the corner though..

Well I changed the rack adaptor last weekend. I took my time and bled the system very carefully. It was very quiet for about five minutes and then started making noise again. I really think my rack and pinion might be the problem, I just don't know that there is a way to verify this assumption. I really hate to spend 5-600 dollars on a new rack and have it turn out to not be the problem.

Rather than buy a new rack, have you considered getting your’s rebuilt?

May want to check with @The Car Stereo Company and @B E N

I believe both of them have mentioned trying this or actually having it done.

I haven't had mine done. If you buy a "remanufactured" unit with a core charge you are essentially paying for a rebuild.

I don’t know if I’d trust a remanufactured rack. I don’t really have a problem buying a new one if I need to, it’s just that I don’t know if I do. I don’t like buying things I don’t need. I’m probably gonna just bite the bullet and really cross my fingers that fixes my problem. I really don’t know what else it could be.

Rock Auto has a Motorcraft rack for $329; I’d go with that.

I bought a remanufactured Motorcraft rack from Rock Auto (thanks for the tip FordTechOne). I’m holding off slightly on the replacement however. I’ve wanted to install RPG tie rods for a while. Since my truck is nearing 100k and it will all be apart, I figured now was the time to do it. I’ll probably buy the tie rods in a couple weeks and then we’ll see how this all goes.

Have you replaced the rack or have any updates on your issue? I literally have the exact same problem you do from the noisy pump to the stiffness at idle or slow speeds. Been dealing with it for over a year now. I have checked everything so many times and bled the systems many many times as well and its still noisy and intermittently stiff. I also think its gonna be my rack but dont want to just replace it without knowing for sure. Lees also sent me a replacement pump and i even had the current one rebuilt once as well.
