It wont prevent spare tire stealing, thieves easily pop that plastic plug through the bumper with a tire iron.
I wonder if a better lock might be in the market.

Do you just leave your keys in the ignition when you walk away from the truck? Because the same arguement applies. Not having the keys to the truck won't stop a thief from taking it. BUT it will stop a heck of a lot of other people who aren't going to go to the extremes for stealing it.

The spare tire lock won't stop a theif who's prepared to go bust the lock out, but it does stop a thief who is just looking for the quickest/easiest tire to steal, or young punks looking to play pranks. And if your truck is sitting next to another one without a spare tire lock, well then the lock worked. And beyond the lock, they're also going to need the jack rod to insert into there and lower the spare down. It won't come down if you just remove the lock.

I'm sure if you're that concerned about it, you could get a short cable and loop it through the wheel over the frame rail and put a masterlock on it as even more added security.

At the dealership that I bought my Raptor from all five trucks lost the spare wheels one night and they did not have the device to lower the tire, they don't need it simply cut the cable. They don't want the whole truck they want your spare tire. That lock is no deterrent to them, just a joke.

Who really reads the owners manual? I'm waithing for the Movie or the cliff notes to come out. I'm just saying! What are the chances that the key will be fozen when you get a flat in the middle of no where on a cold winter night? If anyone is familiar with a 72 Vette, they have a key in the middle of the back end above the license plate. I had news tires put on mine, and watched the tire changer trying to open the trunk to get to the spare. In case you don't know 72 vette's have no Trunks. Anyone know what that key is for??????????

Well, here's my way of looking at it. I ordered my Raptor on September 27, 2010 and took delivery on January 14, 2011. While I was waiting I downloaded the F150 Owner's Manual and the much smaller Raptor manual from Ford, and I read them both from cover to cover. When you spend $500 on a new GPS watch, do ya read the manual so you can learn to use it? When you spend $2500 on a new HDTV do ya read the manual so you hook it up right so that you get the most out of it? If that logic doesn't extend to a $40k+ vehicle, I'd like to know why.

Just sayin. These are sophisticated and complex high performance off-road vehicles, not your momma's Chevy. If a new owner breaks the truck because he was too stupid or lazy to read the manual that Ford provided with the truck, then he shouldn't expect Ford to pay for the damange. There won't be a movie.

No offense intended, it's just that there's some mature responsibility that is required to own and operate a vehicle like this. Well, any vehicle, really.

ha, honestly no. whenever i get something new, i rip it out of the box or whatever it came in and just start playing like a 6 year old. the manuals just get tossed over my shoulder. if after a few hours of cursing at it for not doing what i want, then i look for where the manual landed and begrudgingly read it. is it the best way of doing it? probably not.... but its more fun that way i think! :waytogo:

No offense taken, but it's a f150, not a Bugatti Veyron I'm trying to put into 250 mph mode. And just to set the record straight, Ford makes trucks a lot more expensive. That makes no difference. I've managed to drive it all these months without running over school buses, old ladies and shopping carts or EVEN neighborhood cats (though I am working on that last shortfall) AND also managed to not break the truck or ask ridiculous questions like what the pole on my tailgate is for on FRF.

Don't get me wrong, I get it. I see people get flamed all the time for asking a question others think are stupid, and I'm fine with that, but, sometimes posting a question someone can answer in two seconds is easier than looking it up in a book that is 9/10s useless information if you have been driving longer than 10 minutes.

I have begun to see the bashing of people who asked questions deemed "stupid" somewhat regularly.. sad statement to the evolution of this site.

I have not read my manual nor do I intend to. Most manuals are, as Dubbs said, 9/10's useless and for the remaining things I've need to find out about, I come here. This place is FAR more valuable to me as a tool of information than that manual.

I browsed the manual for some things like the information dash, but when i first got the truck I did a walk around with the dealer. I remember checking the spare and then asking the dealer how to let it down. I was worried that years from that date, I would be stuck on the side of the road being that guy that doesn't know how to get his spare tire or locate his equipment. I made sure he showed me where the jack was, and how to get the spare down.

At work we use tahoes, and they all have the key in the back to let the spares down. Isn't this a standard for most trucks/suvs? No one has stolen spares from my work tahoes... but then again they are marked as border patrol.
