Is it just me, but why do you need to filter oil that is going in to a catch can? Why filter something you are going to throw away?

Your not filtering the oil. The screen is used for the oil to cling to and then drip to the bottom of the catch can. Stepside was using the paint filters as a screen for the oil to adhere to.

The filter is not what you're thinking of in the traditional sense of cleaning or refining.
The filter is used as a medium to separate the oil from the air/oil mixture of the
Positive Crankcase Ventilation system aka PCV.
Many PCV systems today do not use a valve. Instead, a series of baffles and/or small orifices are use.
The amount of air/oil entering the Oil Separator aka 'Catch Can' is dependent on manifold vacuum,
which is a factor of the driver or 'nut behind the wheel'.
Adjustment of the 'nut behind the wheel' will ... --- ... never mind . . off topic.
Anyhow, the mesh used in the Oil Separator catches the heavier oil particles and only the air passes back into the intake system.
So, the filters are nothing more than a Separator of Oil from Air.

You also do not HAVE to throw it away, if it is clean and has been changed regularly, you can actually pour it right back into the crankcase. No need to discard the oil from the catch can.

Cleaned out the JLT Oil Separator

Did this yesterday. This is with the new, upgraded screen that JLT sent out. I put approximately 700-800 miles give or take since the upgrade install. Definitely seems to be an improvement over the original screen. I never got this much oil before. It was probably just a hair over half full.
You can see in the second pic the cream colored thick stuff at the bottom of the canister.
Just thought I'd share and see what you guys think.
Thanks again JLT.

WOW! That is a lot. I'll have to check mine when I pull back in from sea. I have about 700 miles since I put the new screen in.

Yes it is a lot. I was use to the old screen, there was always just maybe a tablespoon full every time I checked it.

So how do you know if you have old screen or the new upgraded screen? I purchased mine in December 2013.

The old screen kind of look sort of like a 20 oz soda cap. The upgraded screen is long and thin maybe an inch long with the diameter of a pencil.
If you go on JLT website they should have some pics.
