As long as you have real gps and not agps (assisted gps, from cell towers).. Found that out at snoball 500 with back country navigator (droid rzr maxx, ipad)..

Yup. Ipad mini has no true gps. They make add ons for the old ones but none for the lighting connector yet
Couldn't you just get the Traditional Dock Connector -> Lightning Connecter adapter and be golden?
We use Motion-X GPS HD. You can download TOPO maps before you head out somewhere, and it can import GPX files so you can pre-plan your route. If you have a 3G iPad, the built in GPS will work fine out in the boonies, no cell signal required, but if you have a Wi-Fi only iPad, you'll have to get an external GPS antenna to do your remote navigating.
