As long as you have real gps and not agps (assisted gps, from cell towers).. Found that out at snoball 500 with back country navigator (droid rzr maxx, ipad)..

Yup. Ipad mini has no true gps. They make add ons for the old ones but none for the lighting connector yet

We use Motion-X GPS HD. You can download TOPO maps before you head out somewhere, and it can import GPX files so you can pre-plan your route. If you have a 3G iPad, the built in GPS will work fine out in the boonies, no cell signal required, but if you have a Wi-Fi only iPad, you'll have to get an external GPS antenna to do your remote navigating.

These apps and devices have come a along ways.

Well, I downloaded Motion-X to play around with it on our up coming camping trip. So how do you down load topo maps using Motion-X?

Just ordered a Bad elf external gps adapter, and a ram windshield mount so I can use MotionX I also downloaded the topo maps to my ipad from motionX so hopefully I won't need to be connected..but if so i'll use my phone as a hotspot to make that work..
When using motionX is it like the same format as the OEM nav? Where your arrow moves along the route
