Trey when you talk about frequency, it would help if you put the frequency number ex, 151.625 is Rator Expeditions.. I picked up the Programming software and have prgrammed my Radio for local police fire sheriff and Chp... I also set them to inhibit TX so I cant accidentally talk on them. I spread mine in to zones For where I live, where I go to alot, and then Rator runs I added San Bernadino sheriff, CHP, Border patorl, for that area. The Icom will do multi zone 16 channel per zone.... There is also a backup channel for SCORE called rescue 3 for the desert south west you might add...

151.625 is Weatherman, and it's programmed into my radios. The frequency list has the actual freq and the name of it as well.

Question for Trey or anyone else that has antenna experience: The way I want to mount the radio will put the antenna and magnetic mount farther away than the current length of the antenna cable. Can I get an extension to bridge the two feet that I need to get everything tucked away cleanly? If so, what kind of extension cable do you recommend?

I think any extension will work as long as it has good quality connectors.

Buy a good barrel connector, so259 and then it will simplify the installation.... I have seen people run this cable up to 150 feet no problem, not recommended.....

I was confused after doing some Google searches. I was seeing RG8, RG58, 50ohm, 75ohm, etc., and didn't know how all of that played in to the VHF bands and the Icom radios. I guess I'll just go to my local RadioShack and see what they have.

The mag mount and radio have pl-259 connectors. Any pl-259 extension should work.

Use RG-8X 50ohm coax. RG58 is no good for UHF or VHF

What is a good antenna setup for this (I have the Icon but it's still in the box)? Anyone installed a permanent antenna? I thought I saw some posts but can't find them now.

Anyway.... what's the best external magnetic mount antenna that goes with the base that comes with this setup?
