FYI speed limits were set decades ago to save fuel.

C'mon, that's a stretch, speed kills and insurance claims are expensive. That's the real motivation to keep the speed limits reasonable, otherwise, the speed limit would be the same in the city and highway, including playgrounds and school zones.

The guy started this by saying that he didn't realize that he was going that fast (therefore unintentional), being marveled by it and having his wife verify it. The verification probably took about 10 seconds max. The critics need to get off of their soapboxes and put away the high-and-mighty scathing of the guy.

I pass rigs driving on the 1 in baja all the time. I will be doing it again on Friday. There is one particular stretch that is straight with great visibility where occasionally I need to hit 100 to quickly get past a rig. BTW, that is a safer move than doing it at 80. The truck feels great at that speed. I am surprised that I am actually going that fast when making the pass.

Cut the guy some slack. A few here were stright-up AHOLES, with the name calling. Or should I say, "Alpha, Hotel, Oscar, Lima, Echo, Sierra's"...

I also love the comment where one person said that the original poster was one of the guys who gets him out of tickets by having an intellectual conversation with L.E., comparing the safety of his driving at high speeds compared to a semi doing the same speed. Right... I bet that got you out of a LOT of tickets. You must live by some seriously submissive cops.

I hit 106 on a very empty and flat stretch of rural highway while breaking in the Raptor, it felt pretty stable and not unsafe at that speed but I know how catastrophic a blowout would be so I probably won’t do it again. I hit 90ish a couple times this morning passing trucks on a rural 2 lane highway posted 65 mph, I prefer to pass as fast as possible to get it over with and get back in my lane then coast back to my cruise control speed. Criminal speeding in AZ is +20 or over 85 mph on 75 mph posted highways. I generally set my cruise at 79 mph on a 75 mph highway, but there are times when traffic is moving smoothly at 85 or better.

My buddy had a front coilover shock come apart at 90+ mph on I-40 probably 15 years ago. He was driving a 1995 F-150 prerunner with 22” of front travel, 28” of rear travel, +4 beams, and 35” Baja T/A tires. When the shock came apart it took out the right front tire, so between the suspension uptravel and the tire the right front dropped 20”+. He kept the truck upright but said it was a hell of a ride.

Look, I don't agree with the OP's original post, but his statement about speeds limit and gas consumption is correct. The speed limits were decreased during the gas crisis in late 70's. Since then some states have gone back to their original limits.
If your statement was true, why isn't the interstate system's speed limit the same all over the country?

Its because the difference between negotiating a "panic" maneuver @ a speed of 75-80 mph vs 100-120 mph is HUGE - its even more dramatic when you're talking about a vehicle that weighs 5500-6000 lbs & is hovering 1.5' off the road riding on bouncy tires on a squishy suspension w/ all the weight over the front axle & none of it in the back!!!!

I have driven in HPDE & on road courses in sports cars & once you've experienced how quickly your butt can get puckered from snap back oversteer @ 80 in a 3200 lb lowered vette on sticky ass 305mm 100 treadware tires (basically driving fast & forcing yourselves to do "panic" type driving maneuvers on a closed course setting) - you can start using you're own imagination "hmmm I wonder how that would've worked out driving like that behind the wheel of my Raptor instead" - and, the mental picture isn't pretty

100% agree WRT T = 1/2mv^2.

That said, WRT your snapback experience, I drove a C5Z and then a C6Z for several years. >= C5s are notorious for snapback oversteer... and also on throttle oversteer... not sure i'd use them as a proxy for other cars in this respect. Tho their suspension is well damped so it's not as catastrophic as it could be if crappy damping tuning were involved. My understanding is it has something to do with the rear suspension geometry esp when combined with sticky tires.

IMO the Raptor is an interesting animal on the street. She's a big girl with a ton of bodyroll, but IMO, she's very predictable and controllable in various forms of skid. The shocks are super floaty, but they're not lincon continental... they're well tuned. One benefit of high CM is you can more easily put weight where you want it. IMO, its limits are pretty low and approachable, which adds a level of confidence. WRT its weight distribution, mine is 54/46 as per cat scales; i've driven worse...

FWIW, i find the rap to be a ton of fun on the street. It feels in its element when hooned, and its low performance gives it the 'slow car driven fast' street fun factor.

Do you still where your disco shoes and brush your chest hair through your glitter disco shirt? I don't, I live in the present and hopefully the future, where speed kills and speed limits have not increased with more electric vehicles on the road. Just ask @911 Crazy , he still drives his prius below the speed limit.
