I understand. It's a trial and error type thing. I really want the throatier sound without dishing out the cash for an exhaust system. I'll look into mufflers and resonators.
I was reading about the DHM cutout and found that it decreases performance so that's a no no for me.
Gotcha.
I'm a fan of fully tuned and optimized exhaust systems. I've seen the dyno results for myself when swapping out stock for an engineered cat back system.
But you're right; those systems can cost some big bucks, so they're not for everyone.
This is going to sound kinda silly, and I know some will laugh at the idea... but, have you stopped by your local Mitas or similar exhaust shop? Something I've done before is show up when they're not busy, say mid afternoon during the week and ask if they'll try on a couple different mufflers for me to hear. Most likely they've got a handful of Flowmaster's 'back there' that they can put on for ya. If you like the way it sounds, buy it from them and throw them a $20 for their time. If you don't, ask them to try a different one.
I've done this and it works out really well if you catch 'em on a slow day. One time I had 3 different mufflers put on for me before deciding on a 4th. The muffler was cheap (under $75), I got to make sure I liked the sound on MY car, and the guy helping me made a few bucks too.

Or here's another idea. I have an OG Raptor, with a 5.4L. I love the motor, but have felt I'd like a slightly deeper sound out the tail pipe. I never did anything about it though since it didn't matter that much to me.
But one day I decided to chop of my tips. I did this 'cause the way I wheel the thing sometimes requires climbing rocks, and the pipes in the stock location are just hanging there looking to get crushed. So I figured I'd chop 'em before they got in the way when it mattered.
Some elbow grease with a jigsaw and 15 minutes later, I had this:
And guess what? The sound coming out of the pipes now is *exactly* the tone I would have paid serious $$ for via a cat back system if I'd ever ponied up.
Basically, I made a functional mod and lucked out that it ended up being a great sounding mod too.
