Why gut it at all? Wouldn't this cause a massive backpressure loss in the low end? Would need some headers above em to get that sickening grumble your lookin for.

I'm running an xpipe and duals which sound like a gulfwing Benz on accel. Or it can be the smoothest purr when feathered. Just straight screamin throat with my new 5 star tuner too!

I understand. It's a trial and error type thing. I really want the throatier sound without dishing out the cash for an exhaust system. I'll look into mufflers and resonators.

I was reading about the DHM cutout and found that it decreases performance so that's a no no for me.
Gotcha.

I'm a fan of fully tuned and optimized exhaust systems. I've seen the dyno results for myself when swapping out stock for an engineered cat back system.

But you're right; those systems can cost some big bucks, so they're not for everyone.

This is going to sound kinda silly, and I know some will laugh at the idea... but, have you stopped by your local Mitas or similar exhaust shop? Something I've done before is show up when they're not busy, say mid afternoon during the week and ask if they'll try on a couple different mufflers for me to hear. Most likely they've got a handful of Flowmaster's 'back there' that they can put on for ya. If you like the way it sounds, buy it from them and throw them a $20 for their time. If you don't, ask them to try a different one.

I've done this and it works out really well if you catch 'em on a slow day. One time I had 3 different mufflers put on for me before deciding on a 4th. The muffler was cheap (under $75), I got to make sure I liked the sound on MY car, and the guy helping me made a few bucks too.

Or here's another idea. I have an OG Raptor, with a 5.4L. I love the motor, but have felt I'd like a slightly deeper sound out the tail pipe. I never did anything about it though since it didn't matter that much to me.

But one day I decided to chop of my tips. I did this 'cause the way I wheel the thing sometimes requires climbing rocks, and the pipes in the stock location are just hanging there looking to get crushed. So I figured I'd chop 'em before they got in the way when it mattered.

Some elbow grease with a jigsaw and 15 minutes later, I had this:

And guess what? The sound coming out of the pipes now is *exactly* the tone I would have paid serious $$ for via a cat back system if I'd ever ponied up.

Basically, I made a functional mod and lucked out that it ended up being a great sounding mod too.

Good advice. I didn't giggle at the first part but the part where you said you had an "OG" Raptor had me gigglin' like a little bitch! Haha.

So just to clarify, mufflers will not enhance performance correct?

:ROFLJest:

As a general rule, a muffler swap alone will not, no. Maaayybe a few ponies at max RPM one way or another? But nothing that's not within the margin of error of the dyno anyway.

I like your chopped tips idea but I like the tips and with my Raptor being a street queen I don't have a problem with them. Would you mind posting up a sound clip?

Hmm I can see if I can grab a sound clip, but I think you'll be disappointed. What you'd hear will be much more a function of the audio equipment I used to record it, than the actual sound itself.

And I sure as hell don't have good audio equipment.

I don't believe anyone has actually dyno'd a raptor with a cutout. If you know the info please post it. The one post i remember was a guy who had one put on something else and it makes total since. With it open making less back pressure created more top end HP and lowered the TQ. With it closed increased TQ and reduced HP. Now the place people add the cutout has more to do with it than anything. Mine is after the cats before the muffler. I would imagine there is still lots of back pressure. So HP or TQ increase or decrease is so little you can't tell either way. The secondary raptor same set up with same results. But I like the monster truck sound so thats why i have it.... Less than 200 bucks for it installed and out the door just my wasted time.

Like J I may end up cutting my tail pipes off. They are just asking to get smashed into the truck bed or catch on crap.

I didn't do as much research as I would like on the cutouts but I remember many people said it would decrease performance. I do not remember why. Sorry to be so vague but that's all I got... ******* finals week this week sorry.
