IMO Lowrance is a must for any truck running in remote areas. I have not used tablets or any other source so I cannot compare but I trust lowrance to navigate us thru the Baja 1000 and other races without a hiccup.

Aside from racing you can easily create trails, waypoints, icons then modify, label and share with others while out adventuring. By everyone having the same gps system makes is easy to share files or just help a fellow raptor guy out if he needs a file out in the middle of nowhere.

We have an HDS 7 in our "Baja Boost" F150 which is plenty big.

Only thing I wish the HDS7 had that the 9 has is the video input. On the street when not needing the lowrance Mapping I would have liked to use the the screen for a video monitor as its in a much better location to see than the stock screen. Would be perfect for front/rear cam and if you have an Thermal setup even better

App Update

A few of us went out this Sunday on a run and we tested the APP vs a handheld GPS. The hand held I am referring to are Garmin type trail devices.

Both did the job in regards to navigating. One thing we did find out on apps work best using full lat and long when finding points. The hand held units worked best using degrees and seconds.

Hope this helps those the read this.

I have that permanently installed on my wind shield and use it to run back country navigator on my tablet. It's awesome.

Good to know. I'd like to invest in a gps soon, but don't like the more permanent option of the Lowrance. Thinking a tablet and one of these. I'll check yours out soon enough.

Might you find gentlemen be able to recommend the best lowrance unit? So many to choose from and many have sounders. Hopefully no need for that. :)

I don't know about the best, because that's up to you and your needs.

I'll be ordering this one:

Amazon.com : Lowrance 000-11176-001 Elite-5M HD Plotter with Navionics Gold U.S. Charts : Boating Chartplotters : GPS & Navigation

Any lowrance that's listed as a chartplotter will work. Make sure that it has an internal GPS, otherwise you have to buy the $250 baja point 1.
