I’m tagging along cuz I run a quad 1up and while I’ve made it work, I could go for a setup that doesn’t require me to remove the rack or put a towel down to unload the bed.

As @Dnpbakon and @dillard09 stated, purchase the Kuat NV 2.0 along with the Pivot v2 and you’ll have a damn fine setup giving you exactly what you’re looking for…the ability to open the tailgate unimpeded. In the attached pic, you’ll see the bike rack and pivot arm in action together. You also have the ability to do “add-ons” for additional bikes.
Can’t go wrong with this setup. Plus it’s nice eye candy too! I feel you on not wanting to lose bed space.

I use the Hollywood Racks 4 bike carrier and it works well. It’s heavy, but not bad.
That said, I can’t lower the tailgate. However, I can have the pins pulled and the entire rack pulled to the ground in like 5 mins for unloading anything from the bed (dog trailer in my case). Then just put it back on.
Price is one of the better for the size too.
