Gen 2 SCAB makeover…totally not ripping off Geoff’s 2.5 build!

Quick update: Got the RH (passenger) side turbo and manifold off with no real issues:

Except of course for the requisite puking of coolant from the lines all over the garage floor! LoL

Heat shield removed; that will have to be slightly modified with the larger Garret/Full Race turbos of course; that’s why I also have heat shield blankets for the new snails:

And all but the front two manifold studs (top and bottom) came out with the manifold nuts…those are 1/2” btw, NOT 13mm. All came out easy-peasy thanks to hitting them with liquid wrench penetrating oil a couple days ago.

But I stripped out my last T45 bit trying to remove the LH (driver’s side) turbo:

…so I need to run out and get a couple new ones.

I also need to tun some errands while we’re out, but should be back in time to get the LH turbo and manifold removed, as well as the front timing cover, water pump, etc. but almost certainly won’t have time to pull the motor tonight…we’re hosting a dinner party, and my lovely bride expects me to actually be there to help her entertain the guests! LoL

I want to turn the after dinner entertainment into a wrenching session…we’ll see how that goes, but in the meantime, here’s where we sit right now:

Progress. Slow progress, but we’re still moving forward!

More to follow…

Guests are arriving and I’m still in the garage, LoL, so just a quick teaser pic:

Will post a more thorough update tonight or tomorrow, biggest challenge this afternoon was that I can’t find my pulley puller; will have to go buy another mañana if I don’t find it tonight after our guests leave.

Quick pic dump before hitting the hay…

Got the turbos and exhaust manifolds off; just noticed I still have part of one of the coolant lines for the RH bank still attached to the motor:

Pics of the valve covers so I know which holes have bolts, and which have studs for the wiring loom supports, LoL.

Need to pull the old flywheel too…have a shiny new polished billet flywheel from Suncoast ready to go on. Will need to ensure that’s included when whoever rebuilds my bottom end does the crank assembly balancing.

Same pic as the previous post…. No luck on finding my puller; I must have loaned it out and have since forgotten to whom it was loaned. Will just buy a new one mañana.

I’m very curious to see if the rubber is separating or delaminating on that pulley/harmonic balancer like we’ve seen in so many other trucks with over 100K miles on the clock. Likely gonna order a replacement/upgrade from ATI soon if I don’t find a better option.

One note: No issues at all getting the RH motor mount bolts loosened up in anticipation of the motor removal, but it took the 3’ breaker to get that huge through bolt for the LH mount started!

Tomorrow’s goals are to get the timing cover off, and remove all the timing gear. If I have time I’ll also pull the motor and bolt it up to the engine stand so I can get started on removing the heads.

Priority after undressing the front though is to get the two 4’ rails I have from Inline Fabrication installed on my wall so I can hang all the dang Akro bins full of parts that are accumulating! Still semi-organized right now, but it’s rapidly devolving into a mess! LoL.

I use their rails to store and organize a lot of my reloading gear, but they also work great to hold these larger Akro bins for maintenance and other shop projects too.

More to follow.

@full-race geoff Heads will get sent to Headgames as soon as they get back with me and can work me into their schedule, but I’m torn on the bottom end.

Still want to do a Gen 3, but not quite ready to be the Guinée pig for that setup! LoL. I’m leaning towards just doing a simple rebuild, but curious about the Gen 3 crank.

What’s so special about the Gen3 crank vs the Gen2?

More important question for me is: Do you know if that Gen3 crank will work in my Gen2 block?

And if I’m doing that, what about rods and pistons? I know from experience…a lot of experience dumping stupid amounts of $$ into project cars, LoL…that this is an extremely slippery slope, and that there’s almost no limit to what can be done with deep enough pockets, but looking at a sensible way forward here.

Any thoughts to something like these rods from Livernois? And since I’m in there, pistons too of course.

Edit: Or maybe a complete short block from RMB? I vaguely recall something about them ripping off customers a couple years ago…or was that someone else? RBM (vs. RMB) is sticking in my head for some reason.

Fuuuuuuuuck! This is gonna get expensive…LoL

Also, does anyone know if anyone makes a good aluminum valve cover for this motor?

I really dislike these cheap-ass plastic covers.
I've not seen anything in the aftermarket... however, I can't help but wonder in this age if there is not a hot shit member who might be able to scan/print an aluminum cover. Hell, for the love of god companies are printing inconel suppressors these days!
