I have a 2018 currently at the dealer with failed phasers. They quoted just shy of $4,000 for the fix. Is this something I can expect to be covered under a warranty extension? I brought the truck in under warranty to have the cold start rattle examined and was told it was a "normal characteristic of the vehicle." Sadly at 65,000 miles this is no longer a normal vehicle characteristic and my engine light is on...

What’s your extended good to? I would think this will cover it. I heard in some cases Ford making good on this known case. I’d pursue contacting them and seeing what they say.

@FordTechOne anything else you can suggest?

Usually, if you can prove a warranty-covered problem was brought to their attention prior to warranty expiration, they will cover it. You need to ask the dealer for the record from when you brought it in for that. Find where they logged "customer states..." Depending on whether you or the dealer can produce that paperwork and what it says, you may be able to get it covered retroactively. I have also heard there is extended warranty coverage specifically for phasers, but I don't know the details of that.

Extended warranty coverage was released for non-H.O. 3.5, and in that bulletin it indicated a separate program would be released at a later date for H.O. 3.5 Raptor/Limited. Did you buy the truck new or used?

I bought the truck used. I have paperwork complaining about the noise at cold start but the dealer still refuses to cover it. I called Ford customer service and they were no help. Stated they couldn't do anything because it was out of warranty. Who should I contact in this scenario? Now say I were to pay out of pocket to get this fixed; does anyone know if Ford were to extend the warranty coverage to my engine, would they reimburse me for the cost of replacing the phasers inside the warranty extension? Really don't want to go that route but I can't have the truck sit forever at the shop.

If this reads as true as you wrote it. Then you may have got the short end of the stick. How could a dealer not have been able to diagnose the cam phaser fault and not address. Again I don’t know all the facts and how it went down. So there could be more details? I don’t want to jump and bash anyone, even you. Your obviously new here. You can browse the long thread and see how things worked out for others. Maybe there will be an extension of the warranty on this? Couldn’t tell you.

If you have paperwork, you have a claim. My bet is that the stealership doesn’t want to help because they failed to address the concern, and maybe Ford won’t reimburse them for the repair because the truck is “out of warranty coverage” but that should not be a you problem.

This sounds like a ‘mechanics lien’ abuse. They break the truck down into an assemblage of parts and hold you hostage to fix it. Basically, the car / truck equivalent of ransomware. You can’t practically do anything while it’s apart - unless you actually take it back. it gets complicated here but it sounds like the stealership is not playing on the up and up.

service manager, dealership owner, lawyer. in that order. If it were me, I’d like to know by what excuse they’re claiming this is not a covered repair. I would absolutely record that conversation.

IF you pay out of pocket, that money is gone. You could get them to quote you a reassembly cost, in writing. if it’s not hatefully expensive, pay them to reassemble the truck and get it out of the hands of the talking monkeys. If a warranty extension is coming, you may be able to wait it out and not pay out of pocket; it’s not an insignificant expense.

Either way, upon completion, you should never spend another penny at this stealership.

Even if you get Ford to agree on a warranty repair, I wouldn’t let this dealer touch it.
