I bought the truck used. I have paperwork complaining about the noise at cold start but the dealer still refuses to cover it. I called Ford customer service and they were no help. Stated they couldn't do anything because it was out of warranty. Who should I contact in this scenario? Now say I were to pay out of pocket to get this fixed; does anyone know if Ford were to extend the warranty coverage to my engine, would they reimburse me for the cost of replacing the phasers inside the warranty extension? Really don't want to go that route but I can't have the truck sit forever at the shop.
Per the bulletin on the non-H.O. 3.5, owners are eligible for reimbursement if the repair was performed before the date on the Owner Notification letter. I would think the 3.5 H.O. would be the same when it comes out. The parts are the same, the differences are in the calibration.

The dealer is most likely unwilling to perform the repair because comebacks and repeat repairs are not warrantable if adequate technical information was available at the time of the original repair. So they failed to properly diagnose the concern per the TSB, and now they cannot claim it under warranty. You can run it up the chain at the dealer (GM, Dealer Principal or dealer group) and see if you can get some assistance/coverage. They dropped the ball, they need to own it. There is no excuse for not repairing a concern when a TSB is available, they’re being spoon fed the diagnosis, parts list, procedure, and labor ops.

Update: I spoke with the general manager of the dealership on Friday. He agreed with me that it should be covered under warranty (or at least partial). By the time I got by the dealer the service manager had already started his weekend but I was told by the GM he will talk to him Monday and figure out how to handle this. At this point I'll take what I can get as this is my only vehicle and I cant afford to just pay for it to sit in the shop. Curious, if they decide to cover this only partially and the warranty extension does come to fruition for our vehicles, will ford still reimburse me for my partial payment? Maybe @FordTechOne can shed some light?

Based on the bulletin for the non-H.O. 3.5, owners who paid out of pocket are eligible for reimbursement. The percent of reimbursement is dependent on mileage; up to 69,999 was listed as completely covered.

That’s good information and welcome news about the existing service bulletin. Let’s hope the HO bulletin carries the same level of coverage.

It’s unfortunate that you had to go through this much difficulty, but, it’s almost certainly the best outcome by handling it within the stealership itself. So much less added grief.

I’ve been in those shoes too and understand completely. Maybe you can plead your case for a loaner to the stealership.

Good luck and hopefully they square this away for you ASAP

im in the same boat with my 17.. 75k miles so out of warranty. I sure hope a FSA is coming for the H.O. I placed a case # with Ford today since my dealer diagnosed it as cam phasers. Mine were replaced once in 2019 at 45k miles.

I wanted to chime in here. My 2017 raptor has 75130 miles on it so its out of the initial warranty range. My phasers were initially replaced in 2019 at 45k miles under warranty but just started rattling on cold start again. I initially saw this CSB and was excited thinking I would not have to be 100% out of pocket on the second set. But of course i did not read the fine print where the H.O. was not included. My dealer gave me the 1800 number to Ford and I got a case started with an agent that got me on a three way call to my dealer and offered some financial assistance on the repair. I dont know how much yet, but Im hoping it has something to do with what Fordtechone said regarding "when the H.O. version comes out"

I wanted to ask if anyone has seen those youtube videos of guy pressing the gas and brake down to prime the oil pressure before cranking to see if this has led to any real benefit. of course the youtube comments have been good, but I wanted to ask here as well.

For me, holding the pedal to the floor for 4-5 secs doesn't prevent anything. I can literally hear the phaser clanking (sometimes, not always) as the starter runs without the motor firing. To me, it's the same difference as just letting the noise happen at a regular start. Mine has been making cold start noise for almost 3 years now but it doesn't happen every day. Some days it starts normal, no noise at all. Some days it is a slight noise and some days, it's like rocks in the motor. Funny enough, mine will sometimes even make the noise if the truck sits for an hour or so after being driven. No rhyme or reason to my particular situation but I can say that thus far, the truck still runs like a top (just shy of 27k miles) so I have little incentive to take it in yet.

I have done the cranking with the pedal to the floor on cold starts since my ‘19 was new, it has 12,000 miles on it now. I don’t know if it would rattle on a cold start if I didn’t do that or not and I don’t want to know. I’m just gonna keep doing it and see what happens. I know that there is no rattling on cold starts when i prime the oiling system. It can’t hurt anything to prime the system that way.
