Front Camera Findings UPDATED

So I've been looking up the requirements of activating front camera for those of us that will not be off roading or those of us that want to have the feature to help us in tight parking spaces or what not.

According to this picture on Ford Unveils Changes for 2012 F-150 SVT Raptor - PickupTrucks.com News

This picture shows what I believe to be ORM + what I think is your locker (not sure of that symbol)? OR 4L to be engaged in order to utilize the front camera feature. I hope you can ask the dealer to override all these unnecessary restrictions... I'm hoping others will have information on that.

You'll probably need to get something like the Lockpick or the NAV-TV to remove the restrictions on the camera(s). And I highly doubt that your dealer will, or even could, remove them. More than likely the restrictions are programmed into the control unit, and will have to be defeated or tricked by other means.

I wouldn't go by what some 3rd party article says about how to engage it. Nor necessarily what the image of the productivity screen looks like. I think the most accurate info so far is the Ford publication video that in fine print said something along the lines of "Front camera only works when in ORM and under 15 mph". I don't think they'd limit themselves in 2wd or 4wd modes on it.

*edit* blowing the image up I can better see what you're talking about.

Looks to say

"To Activate Front Camera"
2 symbols OR 4L
"Camera Active Below 15 MPH"
"Press OK to Disable"

Are those 2 symbols ORM and the locker symbol?

I highly doubt the dealer will have any way to disable any of those interlocks. Maybe a tune could tweak it, but I really doubt it.

Certainly looks like the locker symbol to me.

Also, the ORM icon on the screen might be filled with white but lettered in black that's why you see the white circle icon. The inverted icon of this...

It just seems pretty retarded to have these useless restrictions on this option. At $525 plus the material holds on top of the useless restrictions... it makes me wonder when I'll be able to use it if my truck is going to be a street queen.

I'm sure there's some pretty stringent requirements they had to abide by for adding a front camera, and something for "off road use only", because I'm sure there's laws against driving on the road viewing a front facing camera just like interlocks on watching a dvd while driving. So they had to implement some things to really make it enforced it's only intended for offroading only. There wasn't any part in the commercial or sales pitch for the Raptor that the front camera was for parking or street queening lol

I agree with you but Ford can't seriously expect everyone that purchases a Raptor to use it for off road purposes.

Even the Hummer H1 wasn't solely intended for off road usage and that's, arguably, the most capable stock off road vehicle.

Will the camera view be itruded upon if there is a light bar or is it high enough and looking out enough that it won't be an issue? I know nobody has one yet but we know where it will be monuted, how far out & up are the lights on the lightbars?

It depends on which light bar you have and what lights you install on it.

As you can see in this picture it shows that the camera is above and in between the "O" and "R" of the "FORD" grille.

A light bar this tall would most likely be fine and at most only obstruct a very small portion of the bottom camera vision.

On the other hand, with a light and light bar combo such as these would most likely affect a large portion of the camera's vision. If you had a rectangle LED light that could be a different story.

However, none of us have seen or tested the front camera yet so we don't really know how wide/tall the camera's lens can capture. My answer is only based on assumptions but I hope it helps.
Maybe if you combine the perspective of these two photos you can get a better understanding of the front camera's range of vision.
