So would this 7.3L be acceptable to you "it's a dinosaur" guys if it had OHC heads like the 6.2L? 2V per cylinder OK? Do we need boost too? How complicated does it have to be before it's deemed acceptably modern?

SHO/MKS/Flex/Explorer/pre-2015 F150s have the Gen I 3.5L Ecoboost. Basically it's just a standard 3.5L Cyclone engine with turbos slapped on it. Other than the F150, they all still use that engine into the 2019 MY.

I don't think you get it. It has nothing to do with the complexity it has to do with the TYPE of performance the different engines are designed to produce. The type of performance the 7.3 would need to have to find a home in a Raptor or a Mustang exists squarely in your imagination. It simply doesn't make sense, and it's not just me saying it, Ford is also. But go ahead and keep talking about your make-believe version of the engine that spins to 7000 RPMs, has Tesla torque at 0 RPM, breathes like an F1 engine, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and light enough for you to curl.

The buyer actually cares about reliability the most. The ecoboost just doesn't have that. There are too many common problems with it

Talking out of both sides of your mouth again Sassy. The EB engine is far and away the best selling engine platform from any make in the light truck segment. Shockingly, most truck buyers don't agree with you.

Very unlikely the 7.3 would end up in a Raptor...

1) It's a iron block V-8 compared to an all aluminum V-6, while I don't know the exact weight difference, but I'm sure it's got to be close to 200 lbs
2) It would have to be a substantial increase in HP and torque....all that weight for 20-30 more HP & Torque?
3) An all aluminum 5.0/5.2 V-8 with forced induction would be "next" thing...or maybe a punched out 3.5 EB...

Now my perspective is from a guy who uses his truck off road who values suspension over power for the most part...my way of saying the weight increase doesn't help at all while desert running, and if I had a choice between a Gen3 Raptor with more power or more wheel travel, I'll take the 3.5 with more wheel travel every time...

My opinion...

Weight difference is closer to max 100 pounds versus the EcoBoost. My 6.2 (with the iron block) weighed 585 pounds when I pulled it to 6.6 it. I doubt a pushrod V8 will weigh anywhere close to that. A 3.5 weighs 450

I would absolutely want it. It offers a hell of a lot more than sound. It's got reliability, durability, and, more importantly, it's got serious power potential. Can you imagine what that thing will make with some headwork, a cam, and a big Whipple?

And what makes you think it will weigh 300 pounds more than the Ecoboost?

Also, what is the weight of a fully dressed 6.2 vs. a fully dressed 3.5? I've asked many times but I don't remember ever getting a solid answer.

On vacation in Costa Rica and was talking to a Canadian Ford dealer he told me the 7.3 is going in the 2020 Raptor. He seemed pretty confident and answered the question without hesitation. Guess we will see, makes since though as that’s how they moved from the 5.4 to the 6.2. I’d be stoked to see it get the 5.0, I have a 18’ Platinum that I have a Whipple on and it puts 625 down at the tires. It absolutley will dust my 17’ Raptor and gets better fuel mileage. At any rate here’s hoping for the 7.3, that would be the big dog especially supercharged!

Agree - the ecoboost people are really putting up a fight since they know they made a bad buying decision. I am happy we will be able to get the 7.3!
