when it comes to the radios, do the hand helds just fall short for reaching all the way back to the main area? or do they have trouble communicating with the trucks near them on the course? I ask because I don't want to install a full sized radio in the truck and would be using the handheld for emergencies and I'm thinking, if a hand held can reach the nearest truck I should be OK.

thoughts?

Due to the terrain in the area there are dark spots where the little handheld radios did not get out good enough to reach the main area. They where fine for communication between trucks. That is what I had last year and I am glad I upgraded this year.

It should also be noted that the handheld received transmissions from the main area in these dark spots it just did not have a good enough antenna to transmit.
I would suggest looking to see if your handheld has an extended range antenna. I have one for my baofeng handheld.

Hope this helps

For you first run, a handheld would be ok. There will be enough trucks on the track that a) someone will hear you on the radio and radio back to the pit if needed, or b) one of the many trucks will stop to help you.

For the trail ride Sunday, the handheld would be just fine. The pace is slow and everyone will be together.

Thank you. I suspected this was the case but wanted to be sure.

The other thing is, if you end up enjoying yourself and you want to do more runs, you can upgrade to a hard mounted radio and keep the handheld for when you are out of the truck. Or share the handheld with friends when you caravan somewhere.
