I remember back in the day (when newspapers were still a thing), seeing a new Mazda Miata advertised at $35K when the TV commercials were claiming under $20K. This has been going on since the Flintstones. Since I absolutely refuse to pay new vehicle sales tax & registration fees to the state of kalifornistan I chose a 1st Gen instead.

Not sure how much truth there is to this, but I read on a Raptor FB group that west coast dealers are buying trucks from out of state dealers for markup and then selling those trucks for an even higher markup. Pretty wild if true

The dealers in So Cal have been doing this for a long time. It costs them more, but they mark up.

The first two vehicles I owned cost $1000. Combined.

But at one point I owned both and drove one while I fixed the other. I figured each at 90% uptime, so both would be down "only" 1% of the time. Both were built in the '60s and both had more than 130k miles. My next vehicle was a shiny new 1985 Toyota 4x4 for $10k and I never looked back. Unless I'm poor again, I will never willingly own a vehicle that requires constant repair.

Yup. "Tinkering " is fun, but desperately trying to keep it running.... ain't. At some point you want your transpo to be as reliable as your couch; always there, always ready for you!
