First Oil Change

My truck is a few days old so I'm already thinking about the initial first oil change and wondering what your thoughts were. I've always done the first oil change after several hundred miles to give me piece of mind. Never owned a truck with turbos before and a slightly concerned about keeping this expensive truck running perfect for many years

Did my first at 1000 will do my next at 4,000 and keep it at 3000 intervals. I like what Ducati has set, 600 is first than another at 1000 than I believe it’s at 2500 but I think what I did was just fine

Some makes such as Honda use a break in oil and you're not supposed to change it too soon. I don't know if Ford is the same. I follow when it tells me I'm down to about 20% oil life left and change it.

All depends on how much oil you want to waste. If you want to throw an extra oil change in before the first interval I think that's not a bad idea. But with today's full synthetic oils changing at 3,000 mile intervals is pointless.

I did my first oil change at 80 miles, then 2,300, then 9,800. Saw a bunch of increased wear in the last oil change so I shortened the interval to 3K miles until I could track it down. Took 9,000 miles before I saw the plastic oil pan had developed a leak and was letting dirt in. (I was going crazy trying to find an intake or vacuum leak, and never suspected a cracked pan was hiding behind the skid plate.)

Early oil changes get the initial wear-in particles out early so they don't cause additional wear or problems down the line. No harm can come from an early change, and Ford doesn't use a special break-in oil—it's the same Motorcraft synthetic blend you can buy from the dealer.

If you have it changed at the dealer it likely has the 5w20 oil, not the required 5w30.

Then your dealer's doing it wrong. Mine didn't make that mistake.

Yeah, a dealer has never done anything to any of my vehicles, unless warranty that required parts. I do all my own work. However, dealers are notorious for using the oil from their bulk pump/drums, no matter the vehicle requirements. The goons doing oil changes are usually the minimum wage flunkies. The flat-rate techs get the higher paying (hours) jobs. You might want to verify what they used. Not by what's on the ticket, but where it actually came from, the bulk source or individual quarts.

This should be stickied. Some non-warranty work sort of has to be outsourced, like line-X, but no worker at any dealership cares as much for my vehicles as I do.
