I think Ford has become aware of this and has changed their assembly line procedure. I talked to a local Ford dealer techie, and he said the latest ones he has done were only hand tight.
Also, you have to remove a plate from the front skid shield (5 T-40 bolts) to access the oil filter, and remove a small piece from an underbelly shield (3 10mm bolts) to access the drain plug. The drain plug is on the pass. side, and is a yellow plastic 1/4 turn item, no wrench required (maybe a pair of pliers).

Ummmmmm............ Did you just say the drain plug is plastic?

Yes it is - did mine this past weekend - takes about 1/2 of a turn counter clockwise to remove it - used a pair of pliers to remove it and reinstalled it hand tight (you will feel it lock in to place).

Wow. A plastic drain plug. I'm sure Ford isn't the first to use them but sometimes I seriously wonder who is making decisions at Ford.

Could you just drop the whole skid plate? I always did that on my Gen 1 when I changed the oil as opposed to opening that little door....

You could do that, even more bolts though

This sounds like it could have gone horribly wrong. Glad you're still alive, did we go with 5w 20 or 5w 30?

Lol it did burn, but I'll be ok...just dont want anyone else to be surprised by the gusher. DEFINITELY 5W30 for an ecoboost

Yep, but it seems to do the trick...

6 quarts, which includes changing the filter

Correct, 6!

I always did that on my Gen 1. That small opening after you take the little cover off wasn't enough for me to see everything and do it without making a mess so I always pulled the full skid plate off. I think it was only a few more bolts.

I just did my Gen1 yesterday. And like most I take the full skid plate off. Only 6 bolts vs 4 for the little "trap" door. And I feel like I avoid a mess by taking the skid plate off. I like a clean garage floor and this is the best way.

Curious, what intervals will you guys be following for oil changes? Synthetic or regular oil?
