Firewall Insulation EATEN

I popped my hood yesterday and found my firewall insulation/heat shield was partially consumed by some animal!

My mission today is to take apart the cowl and see if the creature is living in my firewall or near by but my assumption is that this happened elsewhere. (Either camping 2 weeks ago or at the dealership last week)

Looking around online I think replacing this is a full engine out job which is not something I want to do. Does anyone have recommendations for a replacement or way to cover it up? I am hesitant to cut out the part that was massacred.

Taking in the timing (season) and locations mentioned, my bets are on either a Chipmunk or Squirrel...I had a Chipmunk earlier this month decide that the insulation around the battery would make a good bedding material and the warmth from the engine bay was a better climate than the outside 45º

Luckily, I caught him early. I sprayed WD40 on the insulation. problem solved!

id clean up the area the best you can, pull off all the hanging bits, pull out the plastic retainers as far down as you can reach. then buy a roll of this stuff, cut to the right shape, again getting down as far as you can. peal the back stick it right to the old mat and push the retainer clips back in to give it a nice "factory" look.


if you really want to go the extra mile you could cover the whole "visible" firewall in the stuff to give a uniform look and may even reap some of the benefits of added sound deadening.

CLose all the doors and windows, cover the vehicle with a tarp, throw a can of raid under it. there won't be anything left after that, if you are worried that the vermin is still present. Maybe there's a better idea, but I did that when I had an old car that sat in a field for a couple years, should of seen the spiders mice crawling under the tarp after 30 minutes.
