Octane is an anti-knock rating. Nothing more, nothing less. If your engine doesn't knock on 87, you do not need anything higher. If the manufacturer says your engine will knock unless you use a certain octane... well then you need to use that octane.
It's really that simple.
Turbo's have nothing to do with it... when the manufacture states what can be used.
Running 87 octane wont hurt the engine one bit. However you WILL have less power (not sure on ecoboost but with the 6.2 its 10 less hp) on 87 vs 91 and your milage will be worse. In fact, the milage difference (on the 6.2) pretty much makes it a wash between the higher price of the 91 vs the lower milage of the 87... What tips the scales is more power!
Now with the ttv6 there is more heat so i promise it is more than 10hp being pulled out.
