Octane is an anti-knock rating. Nothing more, nothing less. If your engine doesn't knock on 87, you do not need anything higher. If the manufacturer says your engine will knock unless you use a certain octane... well then you need to use that octane.

It's really that simple.

Turbo's have nothing to do with it... when the manufacture states what can be used.


Running 87 octane wont hurt the engine one bit. However you WILL have less power (not sure on ecoboost but with the 6.2 its 10 less hp) on 87 vs 91 and your milage will be worse. In fact, the milage difference (on the 6.2) pretty much makes it a wash between the higher price of the 91 vs the lower milage of the 87... What tips the scales is more power!
Now with the ttv6 there is more heat so i promise it is more than 10hp being pulled out.
Im sure google has the answer so look for yourself

Your GT500 problem sounds like valve noise.

If your truck is knocking as much as you say, it would have thrown an engine light long ago. It doesn't sound like knocking either, esp. since it's occurring at idle. Could again be valves, but since you say it's low in the engine, maybe a bad water pump? Then again, could be any sort of rattle. Not likely knocking though.

Your tuner would more likely show a modulation of boost pressure before it retards timing.

People think that well, it's a high compression turbo so surely it needs high octane. But remember that a high compression turbo doesn't have to produce high pressures. Open the waste gates and it's gone.

The advantage of higher octane is that the waste gates won't open as much. The engine will allow a higher boost level, and you'll get more power. At the cost of worse economy, of course. But running low octane fuel isn't going to damage anything - you just won't get as much out of the engine as someone who does. Knock sensors and knock prediction won't let you damage the engine.

At what point the boost throttling happens - now that's an interesting question. It won't be idling in the driveway, and probably not tooling around town. It's probably going to show itself only at higher RPMs and big boost - trailer towing, highway on-ramps, etc.

My tuner displays over 100 PIDs. Spark Retard has nothing to do with boost pressure. I measured timing retard on my 2014 Raptor as well. See picture below. Upper left hand corner.
I have been doing this for a while now.

Have you looked at the other posts about Gen 2 Knock? The manual says is normal. I will get a clip. My wifes car is Direct injection and sounds nothing like this.

This is a fallacy...there is nothing in the fuel system that would prevent the successful use of e85...in fact as soon as I can get my freaking hand on a gen 2, I will be running e85 with a custom tune!



Except for the fact that you will need a 20-30% fuel increase and I'm not so sure the stock injectors have that much headroom. But other than that, i like where you are going. Easily another 150hp on e85

The avertised HP and torque #s for the Gen1 Ecoboosts were with 87 octane but went up with Premium fuel.
Not sure if this applies to the Gen2 Ecoboost or not, but the Gen1 3.5 Ecoboost was rated @ 365hp and 420 lb ft. but it says in this article with permium fuel it made 385hp and 430 lb ft. http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2013/0...: Twin-Turbo Showdown - PickupTrucks.com News

Yeah, that's one thing I neglected...hopefully the injectors have enough duty cycle remaining to harness that extra fuel.

What are the things different in an e15 or e 85 rated motor?



They have a flex fuel sensor so then the ecu changes timing for the additional power that is available. However the idiotic manufacturers have made na flex fuel vehicles and never a boosted one??? Thats where it would really pay dividends! More timing and more boost... I dont get it
Edit* possibly a more robust fuel system as well

Forced induction flex fuel vehicle would be really thirsty. They probably don't want people complaining about getting 8 mpg on the corn squeeze in addition to the other issues.

its more the power that is gained. more warranty claims etc. think about it.

Don't for get a completely new fueling system that is safe to operate with the added alcohol. New pump, lines, injectors, rails, etc etc. Not a cheep conversion if there is even a compatible set of parts, looks like the offer FFV on the 3.5L NA so maybe the parts are interchangeable but most likely not.
