Do me a favor, please just run 93 or at least 91 in your new Raptor

We don't even have 93 octane fuel in Alaska. 90 is the highest. If I want to go any higher, I'll need to buy some Torco fuel additive, which I can't picture doing.

I will shoot a video of the knock. There are a couple of threads on it and a couple You Tube videos. The knock is low in the engine.

I hate coffee and I hate Starbucks, but after spending so much time on this forum I feel a strange obligation to make this my first stop after my Raptor arrives...

You’ll probably see a lot of Ducatis... :)

What does ford recomend? That's one thing I have not looked at yet on any window sticker. I wish I could look at my sticker, but ford has no info on my truck. Just waiting since Oct.

This SOB knocks like it is about to have a spun bearing already. I run 93 only, still has a wild ass knock at idle. My GT500 would knock, less than this, but still knock after I changed the oil each time. After 1000 miles it would stop as the oil was broken down. 5/50 caused a knock on several for some reason.

I have never had a truck knock like this. Tell you what, I will hook my tuner up today and see if I can record a session with 93 at WOT and see if it pulls timing. Then , I will fill up for the first time ever with 87 and do another WOT pull. Lets see if it pulls timing. My tuner lets me monitor the ECU much like a scanner will.

Your GT500 problem sounds like valve noise.

If your truck is knocking as much as you say, it would have thrown an engine light long ago. It doesn't sound like knocking either, esp. since it's occurring at idle. Could again be valves, but since you say it's low in the engine, maybe a bad water pump? Then again, could be any sort of rattle. Not likely knocking though.

Your tuner would more likely show a modulation of boost pressure before it retards timing.

People think that well, it's a high compression turbo so surely it needs high octane. But remember that a high compression turbo doesn't have to produce high pressures. Open the waste gates and it's gone.

The advantage of higher octane is that the waste gates won't open as much. The engine will allow a higher boost level, and you'll get more power. At the cost of worse economy, of course. But running low octane fuel isn't going to damage anything - you just won't get as much out of the engine as someone who does. Knock sensors and knock prediction won't let you damage the engine.

At what point the boost throttling happens - now that's an interesting question. It won't be idling in the driveway, and probably not tooling around town. It's probably going to show itself only at higher RPMs and big boost - trailer towing, highway on-ramps, etc.

This is a fallacy...there is nothing in the fuel system that would prevent the successful use of e85...in fact as soon as I can get my freaking hand on a gen 2, I will be running e85 with a custom tune!

exactly, you need a tune.
also the injection system is not tested for it, the pump may not be rated for it, who knows about the lines.... E85 is some nasty stuff and if everything isnt up for the task your asking for trouble.

you need a ton more injector for e85, a lot more pump etc... its not as easy as people think it is to run it.
