GEN 2 Correct replacement phasers

You're simply wrong. Cam phasers have a target, if they miss that target by more than 1-2*, you'll get codes. You can 100% tell a change in strategy by looking at data.
Of course they have a target it’s locked at startup, you think they are only off a few degrees as they slap back and forth more than 30 degrees? The code shows up over a period of time if it’s off but not like you just made it out. Most of the phaser replacements have 0 vct codes.

Generally, monitoring for target vs actual to set a trouble code wouldnt be happening until a period of time after start up. So you wouldn't get codes for the startup issues.

just confirmed, my 2018 was fixed in October 2022 at 49,000 miles and the work order has the updated ML3Z part numbers

My “actual evidence” that root cause is the software and not the part is the fact that hundreds of thousands of vehicles were recalled to have the calibration updated with the same strategy proactively applied to models built 11/19 and later. But your theory is that they wasted tens of millions of dollars on a recall that does nothing? Lol ok.

I will say this.... my 2018 at 44,000 miles was CF problem free. In December 2021, I had the mandatory software update performed, and by march of 2022, I got my first CF rattle. then week by week it started to get worse. by aug 2021, every cold start of 8+ hours was full blown CF Rattle.

I am convinced the dec 2021 software update caused my issue.

The new calibration cannot induce a locking pin failure that wasn’t already imminent. With 44k on an ‘18 it sounds like it had existing locking pin wear, especially if it was a pre-July 2018 build. In the video you posted there appeared to be some serious cranking/compression issue going on, which will literally shock the timing drive and exacerbate any existing wear issue.

I am an aug 18 build so it is weird.

Had low fuel pressure code 1x, not had it since they did the service. very weird. just hoping it is 100% good for a while.

UPDATE: Mine was just completed. It took longer but I also had rear pads, and the plugs / boots we talked about.

The Raptor is not my daily so i honestly wasn't as hamstrung as maybe someone who went all in on the purchase and depends on their truck.

From my perspective it was a non issue.

Parts in stock, 1 day turnaround. Now if secondary , tertiary order effects on the motor as in thermostat or a reoccurring issue needing another phaser job ill be pissed and hold the motor in question.
Otherwise , i don't hold any bad blood against the design.

Update # 2 -

Invoice had the ML3Z phasers in OP’s vid. It seems they replaced the coolant also? Or just a portion.

Any spark plug whisperer’s put there? These were from 42,300 miles stock factory plugs…

So, I have first hand experience with FTML. He just did a timing chain and cam phaser service on my truck. I’m here to tell you the cold startup noise is gone!!! Amazing. Looks like that part number is a winner. I’ve put about 1500mi on it already since the service; drive from FTML’s shop to Huntsville. Then to NOLA for MNF to see my Ravens beat up on dem Saints; guess they didn’t, “…move dem chains…”, quite good enough!!!

You guys already have the new part number in an earlier post, so I won’t go into that.

His work is so good the only way I know he was even in my truck is from the absence of the chatter, and seat was slightly adjusted. No oil spills down the side of the truck. No bumper scratches. No missing parts under the hood. No excessive add on costs after the fact. Just good old fashioned clean, precise work completed when promised.

For you younger generation future Ford owners I’d say his son will be taking over the reigns as he’s in the shop turning wrenches with his dad. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in that shop so I could soak up all that knowledge.
