Clunking sound on Gen 3 too

One thing i noticed if you guys want to try out… going over the same surface with brakes on the noise is significantly lower to none. This makes me believe in the strut/shock theory.

I work on cars. I lifted it up; checked torque specs on all components which were fine. I can not replicate the noise bouncing the truck on stand still, rear or front. Annoying

Your description may point to the truck needing to be under load or I should say the shocks need to be “active” while in motion and then produce the sound this would also make sense for others that their shock is further along or whatever and they are getting the noise when they bounce the truck…….. Fox/Ford should share what they have found. (Even if they don’t have the fix) No way they don’t know if this is the problem

Not personally, but everything I’m hearing is it’s a shock issue. Techs have been sending in support requests to hotline so Ford is definitely aware of the concern. Not to mention the high dollar warranty claims that come through for shock replacement that seem to be hit or miss at resolving the issue. I suspect the root cause is either the Live Valve calibration or a manufacturing issue from Fox. I would be surprised if a service message isn’t published within the next few weeks with a repair direction or notice that engineering is investigating. If I see one come through I’ll post it in this thread.

From a MFG standpoint wouldn't make sense for shock replacement to solve any issue here tbh. If the sheer number of failures/complaints just noticed here that would indicate likely an entire batch or whole product line of shocks have a failed or improperly designed component. Thus, the replacement shock is going to be prone to the exact same issue. If so, FOX is going to have one hell of a costly recall on shocks for these trucks. Does seem odd though as the 3.1's are only a small evolution of the 3.0's on Gen 2's which were normally robust (and quiet).

My guess it'll be a replacement if needed type thing as I had on my 18'. possible freezing door latch. only was replaced if I had a problem. (if I reported it). I asume the same thing would happen with this. fix only if customer reported it. bs if you ask me but more than likely if its not a safety issue thats how it'll be handled.

For fox this is a drop in the bucket. for just raptors I mean. especially if it small batch. they sell a hell of a lot more shocks than just for the raptor. and if you are just talking the 21's. has anyone been having issues with 22's yet

yes 22 owners have reported this in the thread. Seems more so on 35 trucks

Could it have something to do with the rear shocks COMBINED with the angles/torque on the various connections for new 5 link rear suspension? It'd be rad if someone could remove one of the rear shocks and test it independently.

My bad clunking was coming from the right rear. I removed the shock and noise was gone. I just had my new shock delivered from ford. I’m going to put it in and send my other to Fox to rebuild and diagnose.

Ford isn’t going to own this issue so we, as enthusiasts, will have to help figure it out.

I’m in out of town but my wife confirmed delivery today. I’m not confident the new shock will be better but at least we will be able to get Fox involved when the look at my original.

I hear ya. I've had the clunk since day 1, which was almost 5 months ago. Like you, I haven't bothered taking it to the dealer to be told its normal. Do you happen to have a shop press or something else you could use to load/unload the shock while its off the truck? I'd be interested to know if the noise can be reproduced.

I work at a ford dealer and the service is awful.they told me the noise is normal that means they don't know what it is.so I'm going to another dealer. It's define the shocks and I would gladly replace them with another brand.
