Cam Phaser/Engine Failure Reports

I have a 2019 Raptor with a 6/2019 build and have the cam phaser rattle since at least December (~6,000 miles on the truck) - I posted the noise in this thread about that time. I took it to the dealer and they told me it was normal for the EB to make a little little bit of rattle on cold start up and that as long as it was not throwing a code or lasting more than a few seconds that replacing them will not fix the concern. Fast forward (~11,000 miles on the truck) and the sound is now way louder - I can hear it in cabin (doors shut) and from at least 100' feet away (included is a video of the rattle). I know that @FordTechOne said the volume should not change, but whatever is causing that rattle noise has gotten louder. I'm curious to hear thoughts.

Normally I would just take it to the dealer instead of coming here, but with the COVID-19 situation right now, I'm not looking to get into a loaner at this time unless absolutely necessary. I love the truck and since it's under warranty for a while still I'm not concerned about a repair bill. However I also don't want to be left stranded.

Interested to hear perspectives on the noise, especially @FordTechOne thoughts.

You won't be left stranded with that cam phaser noise - mine has been doing it for over a year now. I just hold the gas for 5 secs while the starter turns and the noise is greatly reduced. I'm waiting for an official TCB on this before I go in with it.

Definitely noisy cam phasers. I have the same issue and been driving mine for over 6 months with no problems.

Hello, i am new to this forum, just signed up today. I have a 2019 with a 5/19 build date with 2000 miles on it. I don’t have any cam phaser rattle yet that i can hear. I have heard talk of spinning the engine over with the gas pedal to the floor to build oil pressure before starting on a cold start to prevent the rattle if your engine has the cold start rattle. If I do not have any cam phaser rattle yet can i do this now to prevent the cam phaser mid lock pin from breaking or not parking properly and preventing the need for cam phaser replacement? Just am trying to avoid ever getting these replaced, don’t like the idea of someone tearing the thing apart. If it prematurely wears the starter or battery out, i am ok with that, i can replace those myself with no problem.

relax ... no one knows exactly why some engines suffer from bad cam phasers. And because no one knows the exact cause any action taken to prevent it is just a stab in the dark.

Read this entire thread. Every 20 post is a newbie trying to ask what can I do to prevent it.

BTW ... my wife's 2018 Lariat had it at 16k and yes it sucks to have open heart surgery but 7K later it has not come back and the engine runs great.

Just drive and enjoy your truck. If you get it, Ford will fix it.

You def have it. My wife's 2018 Lariat at 16k sounds just like yours and the sound got louder over time. I shared the video with my dealership and they knew exactly what it was and told me to bring it in.

Has anyone run theirs long enough to where the timing chain is starting to slap? I bought my truck used, and it seems to have the phaser issue, but the sound never really goes away. It transforms from a rattle (and "TING" sound on first fire, almost like a starter tooth hitting the flywheel) and then mellows into a light "ticking" sound that is prevalent when the engine is warm. I'm wondering if the ticking sound is indicative of the timing chain starting to slap. Mostly asking because my startup rattle is lighter but doesn't go away quickly like the videos, but the ticking is the easiest to constantly identify.

This is exactly what seems to be going on with my 18'. I bought it at 30k miles and didn't notice the phaser rattle at first. It wouldn't do it every time even on cold start ups. I have only had the truck two and a half months and have put 5k miles on it. The rattle has got louder but the more alarming thing is what sounds like the timing chain slapping has developed. I have noticed the truck would hesitate at times when really getting on the throttle. Never threw any warning lights or anything. I took it to the dealership where they confirmed bad cam phasers and said the timing chain and tensioners would most likely be replaced as well. Also my driver side seat warmer only worked for two days? They confirmed the seat warmer wasn't working and said they would fix that as well. Five weeks later they finally found me a loaner car which is a complete shitbox of a fusion and told me to bring the raptor in today. They said it would only take two-three days so we will see how that goes. I asked them about the revised part ending in CD. They looked at me kinda crazy and said they were revised parts and that the pcm would be reflashed. I am nervous about it because I absolutely love this truck. Its the nicest vehicle I have ever had and within two months of having it it is it getting tore apart.

I totally get that but hopefully your dealership has done enough of them by now to have the process down. That’s one reason why I’ve been trying to wait, a) make sure the symptoms are prevalent enough to be an easy diagnosis b) ensure my dealership has dealt with a handful before tackling mine c) give Ford enough time to provide dealserships with a proper fix solution.

At least your dealership has acknowledged the issue and is going to proceed with a repair. I’m more nervous about my warranty running out before it’s fixed properly.

That’s one reason why I’ve been trying to wait, a) make sure the symptoms are prevalent enough to be an easy diagnosis b) ensure my dealership has dealt with a handful before tackling mine c) give Ford enough time to provide dealserships with a proper fix solution.

Just curious what year yours is and how many miles? Also maybe build date? My build date is March of 18. You may want to go ahead and at least have them confirm it. I showed them my video but they still made me wait around an hour or so before they confirmed it for themselves. I took mine in five weeks ago and just now actually got to take the truck in for repair today. This has made me really consider getting an extended warranty through Flood Ford.
