I weighed a Gen1, but decided the Gen2's advantages outweighed the ecoboost. Weight difference, frame, more power, suspension upgrades, interior upgrades > V8 sound in my ledger. I knew about the phasers going in, put it in my demerit list, Gen2 still won for my use case.
Not going to wait 3+ years for whatever's next; I have raptoring to do now. I've already had a very fun first year with mine, plan on a few more.
Going to buy the flood warranty and leave the engine near stock. Hopefully, getting the phasers done won't be an annual exercise. Will probably keep it until a year or two into the Gen3, which will hopefully be as big an advance as was the Gen2. If the Gen3 isn't compelling, I'll weigh building my own <whatever brand> new mild prerunner truck for the next DD.
I really like that Ford stepped up and built the raptor, and in that sense I def voted with my wallet. I just wish they'd offered something other than a V6 ecoboost, an opinion driven primarily by exhaust note and cam phasers.
That said, I've run the mental exercise several times... if there were a 700 hp V8 option and there weren't a cam phaser issue with the ecoboost... unsure if I'd opt for the 700 hp V8. With it comes a whole slew of big expenses and|or offroad compromises if it's pressed into proper use. Optimally, I'd like to see something like a 550 hp V6 ecoboost (with no cam phaser issues) or preferably a 550 hp 4.0 TT V8 so it can make some decent sounds. Packaging be damned.
And a ZF 8 speed. Or a DCT.
