Cam Phaser/Engine Failure Reports

Same here.

-Build date November 5, 2018
-7K miles
-First oil changed after 500 miles and then every 3K miles
-Mobil one oil used.
-no tuning. Everything stock besides exhaust system
Not sure if this matters, but adding info... mine was rattling bad every now and then. Had the dealer service it while updating the radio firmware and a few other things and it went away. He said they have to keep it u til it makes the noise. That could have taken weeks. Still has a small funny ticking at start up which I know is the cams, but not a diesel sound. People brought up the ford oil filter is on the dealer diagnostic checklist. Mine rattled when a non ford filter was used, now it doesn’t rattle as bad with a ford filter. People said the motorcraft filter has a check value to help keep the oil from draining out of the phasers. Idk may be something, may be BS.

I did notice yesterday that it was idling kinda ruff. I had a pretty bad miss fire awhile back and it went into limp mode when I hammered it in sport mode going about 75mph. My wife’s land rover has been at the dealer since Christmas Eve, and I don’t want to go thru that, so I’ve been holding off until it is undeniably making the noise.

My brother in law had rand rover. Half time it was standing at the dealership.
Nothing but problems.

I used the Ford Racing filter ever since I bought the truck. It’s much bigger than regular ford oil filter. I noticed that after the first oil change the ticking noise went away. Now I can hear the noise but it’s for a very short time

I’ve used those Ford Racing filters since day one and still have the cam phaser issue twice now.
Yeah I think it’s more about sitting and not being driven. I daily mine and haven’t developed the issue; 24,000miles.

Ruri, I'm in SoCal also. Which dealership did you take it to and how was your experience with getting them to do the cam phasers? I'm starting to develop some of the symptoms and just wondering if some dealerships are easier to deal with versus others.

Actually, we should start a thread with good dealerships for this issue. The one I went to was a no go/not recommended...

It seems quite a few people had this fixed more than once, I'm sure the phasers aren't the best design, but I wonder if the oil passages could be partially blocked or not drilled to spec

This is exactly what the poster here found as they were designing a fix. We are due a report back anytime now on testing progress. It is a shame that this phaser issue exists on the 3.5 ecoboost. The engine would be fine if this issue had been addressed by Ford engineering.
